Student Interest Growing in Civil Engineering at Manakamana Ratna-Ambika Secondary School, Sankhuwasabha

Student interest has grown significantly at Shree Manakamana Ratna-Ambika Secondary School, located in Tumlingtar, Khandbari Municipality-9 of Sankhuwasabha, after the school started teaching civil engineering under the technical stream. Students’ interest has increased after they got the opportunity to study civil engineering from Grades 9 to 12 in their own village.
According to the school’s principal, Kubir Prasad Bhetuwal, teaching under the technical stream at the secondary level began in BS 2073. At present, 103 students are studying in the technical stream, while the total number of students from Nursery to Grade 12 is 1,442. Established in BS 2016, the school currently conducts 46 classes simultaneously in both Nepali and English mediums.
Students studying in the technical stream are required to pay around Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month for books and other educational materials. Teaching and learning are being carried out with a well-equipped laboratory and the high use of technology. Principal Bhetuwal said efforts are being made to develop the school as a model educational institution despite the challenges of the hilly region.
Ease and Opportunities for Students
Grade 10 student Lakshmi Sunuwar said that being able to study civil engineering at an affordable cost in a community school in the hilly region has increased employment opportunities. She said that studying with field practice at the school has helped develop practical knowledge and skills.
Similarly, another student, Bhavish Basnet, said he was studying with the goal of becoming an engineer in the future and serving society and the nation. He also said that studying in the village itself has removed the compulsion to go outside the district to study engineering.
Students from Sankhuwasabha, as well as from the neighboring districts of Bhojpur and Tehrathum, come to the school for study. Before starting the technical stream, the school had been conducting Grades 11 and 12 in the Education stream since BS 2061 and in the Management stream since BS 2066.
Classroom Prayer Due to Heat, Awarded for Excellent Management
As the school is located in the Arun Valley, which is among the world’s lowest-lying areas at 457 meters above sea level, collective prayer is not conducted at the school due to extreme heat. As soon as the bell rings, students participate in the national anthem and Saraswati Vandana in their respective classrooms. The school has also stated that students are taught yoga and meditation.
Due to efficient management, excellent educational activities and results, the school has received awards from the provincial government at different times. According to the school administration, the school received awards of Rs. 5 lakh in BS 2074, Rs. 3 lakh in BS 2075 and Rs. 14 lakh 50 thousand in BS 2078 as a school with excellent management.
