Hamro Khushi Curriculum Begins in Madhyabindu Municipality
Every morning, when the first school bell rings in Madhyabindu Municipality, children don’t begin by opening textbooks or notebooks. Instead, they learn about life, behavior, and emotional well-being.
They are taught how to be happy, become good individuals, and respect nature. This transformation has been made possible by the municipality’s introduction of the Hamro Khushi Curriculum.
Madhyabindu, located in eastern Nawalparasi, is the first in Nepal to adopt such a curriculum, taking inspiration from the successful “Happy Curriculum” implemented in Delhi, India.
Mayor Bhimlal Adhikari shared that this curriculum was introduced because theoretical knowledge alone is not enough to prepare responsible citizens. From Grade 1, the aim is to instill practical knowledge, ethical behavior, and human values.
Teachers Use Activity-Based Learning
Through this curriculum, teachers use a supporting manual to guide students in various activities that focus on good conduct, cultural awareness, discipline, and positive thinking.
Implemented in All 65 Schools Since Shrawan 2081
According to program coordinator Laxmi Pandey, the Hamro Khushi Curriculum has been implemented in all 65 schools under the municipality since Shrawan 2081. She stated that the program has brought motivation and energy to students, teachers, and parents alike.
Plans to Extend to Higher Grades
Seeing the positive behavioral changes in students, there is now a demand to extend the curriculum to upper grades as well. Each morning, a 30-minute session conducted by trained teachers during the first period involves students in meaningful activities.
Legally Backed by Local Curriculum Rights
Under the Local Government Operation Act, local bodies have the authority to develop and implement local curricula. Based on this provision, Mayor Adhikari confirmed that the Hamro Khushi Curriculum is being implemented as a local curriculum.
Topics Include Human Values and Cultural Practices
Students are introduced to topics such as human dignity, behavior, nature, culture, habits, and customs in an accessible and engaging manner. The Gandaki Province government has also included this curriculum in the Chief Minister’s Innovation Program.
Officially Launched by the Minister of Education
In the first week of Bhadra 2081, Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Bidya Bhattarai officially inaugurated the curriculum.
Curriculum Developed After Delhi School Visit
Before developing the curriculum, a team, including teachers and municipal representatives, visited schools in Delhi. After multiple discussions and studies with experts and educators, the curriculum was finalized.
Aligned with National Curriculum Guidelines
Padmaraj Acharya, Undersecretary and Head of the Education Division at the municipality, stated that the Hamro Khushi Curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum Framework 2076. He explained that the curriculum supports children in gaining knowledge, skills, and values, and in developing positive attitudes and behaviors.
No Formal Exams or Evaluation
There will be no formal examinations or grading for this subject. However, as the curriculum begins to create a positive impact on both students and parents, other municipalities are now considering adopting it. Local governments in Kaski, Syangja, and other districts have also shown interest in the Hamro Khushi Curriculum.
