Kathmandu: The Ministry of Education and Sports has begun implementing an ambitious plan to expand physical infrastructure at 109 community schools across Nepal, each with more than 2,000 students.

The Ministry has allocated a total budget of Rs 6.54 billion to strengthen the physical infrastructure of these schools. Of this amount, Rs 5.34 billion has already been released for 89 schools identified in the first phase, according to the Ministry.

The project involves constructing modern three-storey buildings with 12 rooms, well-equipped laboratories, and libraries at an estimated cost of Rs 60 million per school. Construction work is being accelerated under the initiative.

Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel said the infrastructure development work was progressing rapidly.

"In the first phase, we have released Rs 5.34 billion for 89 schools and are accelerating the construction of modern three-storey buildings with 12 rooms. These buildings, estimated to cost around Rs 60 million per school, will include modern classrooms, properly equipped laboratories, and well-stocked libraries," Minister Pokharel said.

"We are fully confident that this will make the learning environment safer, more organized, and more effective for students," he added.

Madhesh Province Receives Highest Priority

Of the 89 schools selected in the first phase, 33 are located in Madhesh Province, accounting for more than 37 percent of the total.

According to the Ministry, Madhesh Province has been given the highest priority in budget allocation and school selection because of the need for greater attention to its literacy rate, educational indicators, and the quality of public schools.

The government's primary objective is to address infrastructure shortages at large community schools in Madhesh Province and improve teaching and learning conditions.

After Madhesh Province, Lumbini Province has the second-highest number of selected schools, with 21, followed by Koshi Province with 18.

Sudurpashchim and Gandaki provinces have six schools each, while Karnali Province has three and Bagmati Province has two.
