Nepal University and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) sign a historic academic understanding

Nepal University and the renowned academic institution of India, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, have formally reached an agreement for academic collaboration.

With the objective of strengthening mutual cooperation, the two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday, 28 January 2025. This agreement has opened a path for cooperation in the exchange of students and faculty members, joint research, and various other academic activities.

Strategic partnership and presentation

Within Nepal University’s ambitious plan to ensure an autonomous governance model and maintain high academic quality, the partnership with a world-class institution such as IISc has been viewed as a significant achievement.

During the MoU signing, Nepal University Registrar Dr. Suryaraj Acharya delivered a detailed presentation on the university’s overall structural blueprint and future strategic plans.

Curriculum alignment and commitment to support

At the event, IISc Director Prof. Govindan Rangarajan expressed a positive response to Nepal University’s academic framework.

He specifically pointed out that there are many similarities between the “Integrated Science” curriculum that Nepal University is preparing to launch at the undergraduate level and IISc’s curriculum. Noting alignment in the academic approach of the two institutions, Director Rangarajan stated his institution’s commitment and readiness to provide necessary support to Nepal University.

Opportunities created by the collaboration

This historic collaboration is expected to have a positive impact on the quality of higher education.

Nepal University Executive Committee Chair Lal Krishna KC stated confidence that, through this agreement, the standard of students’ learning and teaching will improve, faculty capacity will be strengthened, and new opportunities will be created for high-level research.

High-level visit and discussions

At IISc’s special invitation, a three-member delegation from Nepal University traveled to Bengaluru. During the visit, the delegation held in-depth discussions on issues of mutual interest with deans, department heads, and senior professors from various faculties of IISc.

During the same visit, the Nepali team also conducted an on-site observation of IISc’s new campus in Challakere. In the course of the visit, the team learned about the advanced facilities and infrastructure available there in the areas of science teacher training, climate change, sustainable technology, and skills development.
