Morang — The 14th convocation ceremony of Purbanchal University was held on Tuesday at its central office in Gothgaun, Sundarharaicha, Morang.

The ceremony, chaired by Minister for Education, Science and Technology and the University’s Pro-Chancellor, Sasmit Pokharel, conferred degrees on a total of 6,706 students from various faculties.

According to the University, among the students who had completed MPhil, postgraduate, and bachelor’s level studies by 16 Poush 2082, a total of 4,652 students participated physically in the convocation and received their degrees.

During the ceremony, 21 students with outstanding performance in different faculties were awarded gold medals, certificates, and honors.

Minister Calls for Universities Free from Partisan Influence

Addressing the ceremony, Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokharel stressed the need to free universities from partisan political influence.

Stating that educational institutions must be made independent, impartial, and quality-driven, he said university officials should also remain free from political entanglement.

Minister Pokharel emphasized that education should not be limited to degrees alone, but must be practical, profession-oriented, and connected with skills. He encouraged students to develop a mindset not only of seeking employment but also of creating jobs.

Chief Guest Highlights Practical and Skill-Based Education

Chief guest Prof. Dr. Vivek Lal, Director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, India, praised Purbanchal University for providing Nepali students with practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.

Expressing happiness at visiting Nepal for the first time despite teaching Nepali students for a long time, he said that no matter how many degrees one earns, education that is not practical and skill-based cannot be linked to productivity.

Vice-Chancellor’s Message

Similarly, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Biju Kumar Thapaliya urged people not to view the university merely as a physical structure made of bricks and cement, but as an important academic institution like the foundational roots of society.

He called on the graduating students to use the knowledge they had gained for the benefit of society and the nation.

Purbanchal University as a Higher Education Hub

Established in 2052 BS, Purbanchal University has now become an important center of higher education in eastern Nepal.

At present, more than 37,000 students are studying at the university. In recent years, the university has been adding new programs, including MBBS classes, while placing special emphasis on research and technical education.
