Tribhuvan University Decentralizes Its Exam System to Provinces

Tribhuvan University has decentralized its examination system—previously centralized at the Examination Control Office in Balkhu—by expanding it to the provinces.

Students have been demanding for years that they should be able to sit examinations from any part of the country. Last week, the University’s Free Students Union staged a sit-in at the Examination Control Office premises, after which the office administration reached an agreement with them.

To gradually decentralize examinations and make the system information-technology-based, the University has this time arranged for students to take the three-year bachelor-level chance examination in their respective provinces. The chance exam had been scheduled to begin in Kathmandu from Magh 18, but it will now be conducted from Magh 25 onward at provincial-level centers.

A notice states: “Considering the inconvenience and financial burden on examinees if the examination is held in Kathmandu, the examination previously informed as per the earlier notice will be conducted from Magh 25, 2082, under the Regional Examination Control Offices, ensuring at least one examination center.”

Under this arrangement, examinees from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Management, and the Institute of Science and Technology will be able to appear in the partial or chance examination.

“We have done this as part of moving toward decentralization of examinations,” said Examination Controller Laxman Paudel. He said other examinations, like the three-year bachelor program, will also be conducted from the provinces as far as possible.

Tribhuvan University Free Students Union Chair Deepak Raj Joshi said reforms to the examination system have been delayed despite the agreement reached with students.
