UN Adopts Nepal’s International Wellness Day Proposal

The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday overwhelmingly adopted Nepal’s resolution to observe April 15 every year as International Wellness Day across the world.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the UN’s decision to endorse Nepal’s proposal, which advances the country’s indigenous wellness traditions as a form of diplomatic soft power, and to declare a global observance of Wellness Day is a matter of pride for Nepal and the wider region.

First International Wellness Day to Fall on Baisakh 2 in Nepal

In Nepal, the first International Wellness Day to be observed this year will fall on Baisakh 2, 2083 BS (April 15, 2026).

During the process to discuss and adopt the proposal, 40 friendly nations, including neighboring China and India, supported Nepal’s initiative.

Proposal Advanced Under Foreign Minister Balanand Sharma

Current Foreign Minister Balanand Sharma made the first decision to take the proposal to the General Assembly on the very day he assumed office.

According to Minister Sharma, the proposal has become not only a strong medium for spreading Eastern civilizational practices that promote healthy and disease-free living across the world, but also a meaningful way to introduce Nepal’s original practices to the international community.

Nepal’s Soft Power and Traditional Knowledge

He said, “It will also encompass meditation, Ayurveda and yoga, wellness, natural healing, and indigenous practices as part of Nepal’s international diplomatic soft power.”

Minister Sharma said the General Assembly’s recognition of Nepal’s position as beneficial for the world is a historic achievement for the country.

He added, “The Eastern knowledge, religious and yogic conduct, skills, experience, practices, and wellness methods we possess will now be heard, recognized, practiced, and followed by all countries of the world. This has added another dimension to Nepal’s identity.”

Government Expects Broader Global Impact

On behalf of the Government of Nepal, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai said the declaration is expected to help the world build healthier lives and societies by encouraging exchange around lifestyle and people’s physical, mental, social, cultural, emotional, and ecological well-being.

He clarified that it will also promote Ayurvedic treatment of disease, healthy living, and inclusive health systems while helping build stronger and more resilient societies.

He said, “This has further elevated Nepal’s global standing and added to the dimensions of Sagarmatha, the land of Buddha, and peacekeeping.”

Natural Resources and Wellness Diplomacy

It has been claimed that the day holds the capacity to present Nepal’s immense biodiversity, valuable herbs, and incomparable natural resources together before the world, making it an exceptional gift for future generations.

According to Joint Secretary Krishna Prasad Dhakal, along with the practice of soft diplomacy, the day is expected to support foreign exchange earnings through future government plans for the development of wellness-oriented community-based tourism in Nepal.

He said, “This day will help strengthen Nepal’s presence in the world and further brighten the country’s image, while also promoting Nepal’s culture, traditional methods, food, lifestyle, and Ayurvedic practices.”

Ministry Sees Potential for Tourism and Identity Building

The world is constantly searching for something new.

Nepal has geographical diversity made up of the Himalayas, hills, and the Tarai, and with it come corresponding lifestyles, natural resources, healing methods, the use of herbs, and traditional practices related to building a prosperous society.

The ministry believes that by promoting these and building an identity rooted in local distinctiveness, Nepal can turn them into a major attraction for foreign visitors through soft diplomacy. This broader vision also aligns with ongoing discussions on health and wellness in Nepali society.

Future Promotion of Soft Diplomacy

Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Kshetri said that since soft diplomacy is still a relatively new practice, preparations have begun for further initiatives in the future to promote it.
