Scholarship Helps Poor Student Pursue Computer Science

Saptari Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality–8 resident, 17-year-old Omnarayan Yadav, is currently studying Computer Science in Grade 11 at CCRC College, Koteshwor, Kathmandu.

With a determination and dream of becoming a computer engineer, he continues his education with excellence despite financial hardships.

After being selected under the Madhesi quota for the scholarship provided by Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Om now has to pay only 50,000 rupees of the total two-year study cost to the college.

This has become a great relief for Yadav, who comes from a poor family. His father, Devnarayan Yadav, works as a carpenter and is currently in Bharatpur for livelihood, while his mother, Babita Devi, is a housewife. Their family’s economic condition is very weak.

Out of the family’s 10 katthas of land, his father sold one kattha for 150,000 rupees to cover Om’s higher education expenses, Om shared with Gorkhapatra.

“With the aim that my studies should not stop under any circumstance, my father sold land and kept money in reserve,” he said emotionally.

He further explained that his father, working as a carpenter, has been supporting the family—mother, younger brother, sister, and himself—with much difficulty, but poverty has not diminished his determination.

“Although I come from a very poor family, I am studying with the goal of becoming a computer engineer and will work hard to fulfill my parents’ dream,” he said.

Om passed SEE from Janata Secondary School, Topa, with excellent marks last year. Based on this achievement, the Amarnath Jha Memorial Trust honored him with 25,500 rupees cash and a certificate during the second memorial of the late Principal Amarnath Jha on Monday.

Receiving the award and certificate, Yadav said, “This amount is not only a prize for me but like oxygen. It will cover my rent for five months.”

Seeing his dedication, struggle, and determination toward studies despite financial hardship, Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality Chair Arun Kumar Mandal, former FNJ Saptari Chair Shambhu Jha, and Amarnath Memorial Trust Chair Rajiv Jha expressed their commitment to support Yadav’s education as much as possible.
