Overview

The Central Department of Mathematics holds the esteemed title of being the oldest department in the history of science education at Tribhuvan University, Nepal. Since its inception on September 20th, 1959, it has played a vital role in shaping the mathematical landscape of the nation.

History:

The establishment of the Central Department of Mathematics took place on September 20, 1959 A.D. (4th Aswin 2016 B.S.), shortly after the formal announcement of the commencement of M.A./M.Sc. classes in various subjects, including Mathematics, at the University College in Tripureswor on July 14, 1959 A.D. (30th Ashadh 2016 B.S.). At its inception, the department had a small cohort of only half a dozen students and an equal number of faculty members.

Under the leadership of Prof. Aasutosh Ganguly, who served as the first head of the department, notable faculty members such as professors Keshav Dev Bhattarai, Govinda Dev Pant, and Dhup Ratna Bajracharya contributed to its early development. The department witnessed its inaugural batch of students graduating in 1961. Despite the various challenges faced by the education system due to socio-political changes in the country, the department has consistently produced accomplished graduates.

Over the years, the department's alumni have not only attained prestigious positions in public offices but have also spread across the nation, enriching schools and campuses as teachers and lecturers. The impact of the department's graduates extends beyond national borders, as many of them have found employment as teachers in foreign countries.
