Overview

PhD in Mathematics at Central Department of Mathematics, Tribhuvan University

Course Overview:

The PhD program in Mathematics offered by the Central Department of Mathematics at Tribhuvan University is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in teaching, research, and advanced knowledge in the field of Mathematics. This program aims to develop students' academic excellence and contribute to scientific theory and/or experimentation through original research.

Course Outlines:

The specific course outlines for the PhD in Mathematics program can be obtained from the Central Department of Mathematics at Tribhuvan University. They will provide comprehensive details about the required courses, research methodology, and other relevant information related to the program.

Duration:

The duration of the PhD program depends on the type of enrollment:

a) Full-time researcher: Full-time researchers are required to complete a minimum of three years of registration before submitting their PhD thesis. In exceptional cases where significant work is evidenced through standard publications, the Central Department Research Committee (CDRC) may recommend thesis submission after two years of registration. If the candidate fails to submit the thesis within five years of registration, their registration will be automatically canceled.

b) Part-time researchers: Part-time researchers must submit their PhD thesis after completing five years from the date of registration. The thesis must be submitted within seven years of registration, or it will be considered automatically canceled. This rule also applies to part-time researchers who were enrolled before the amendment of PhD program regulations in 2071. A full-time researcher is someone who dedicates their full time to research work and takes leave from their job. Otherwise, they are considered part-time researchers.

Fee Structure:

The registration and monthly fees for part-time researchers are double that of full-time researchers. However, full-time faculty members of Tribhuvan University are eligible for a 50% waiver on the monthly fee. For detailed information on fees, it is recommended to contact the administration office of the Central Department of Mathematics at Tribhuvan University.

Re-Registration:

If a candidate has substantially worked on their research but fails to submit the thesis within the specified period (as per rule 7.1), they can request re-registration on the same topic under the same supervisor. Re-registration can be obtained by submitting a fresh application to the Central Department within one month of the registration's expiry. In such cases, the candidate can submit the thesis within two years (for full-time researchers) or three years (for part-time researchers) from the date of re-registration. Failure to submit the thesis within the specified period will result in automatic cancellation of re-registration. The fee for re-registration will be double the normal registration period fee.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for enrollment and registration in the PhD program in Mathematics at the Central Department of Mathematics, Tribhuvan University, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Hold at least a second division in M.Sc/MA in Mathematics from Tribhuvan University or a recognized university.

Admission Criteria:

The enrollment and registration process for the PhD program in Mathematics is as follows:

  1. Obtain the application form (available in January and July) from the concerned Central Department of Mathematics at Tribhuvan University. The application must include a research proposal, CVs of the candidate, supervisor, and co-supervisor(s), a list of publications, recommendation from the supervisor, a no-objection letter from the employer, and an assurance letter of study leave (for full-time research candidates).

  2. Defend the research proposal before the Central Department Research Committee (CDRC) to demonstrate adequate knowledge in the proposed field of study for PhD research. The CDRC will evaluate the research proposal and application and certify that the subject offered by the candidate can be pursued within the department or other concerned departments or research centers of Tribhuvan University or other recognized research institutes.

  3. The CDRC will recommend the application to the Research Committee of Tribhuvan University Institute of Science and Technology (IOST) for registration into the PhD program. The application will be forwarded to IOST within three months.

  4. IOST will review the CDRC's recommendation and inform the CD Head, the concerned institute, the candidate, and the supervisor about the decision within two months. If approved, the candidate can proceed with registration at IOST.

  5. The candidate will receive provisional registration for one year from the Dean's Office. Within this year, the candidate must demonstrate their research ability. After receiving a recommendation from the CDRC, the Research Committee of IOST will consider the candidate as a PhD student.

  6. The title of the PhD thesis will be provisional at the time of registration but must be finalized six months before thesis submission, following approval by the Research Committee after CDRC's recommendation.

  7. Interdisciplinary research candidates must fulfill additional requirements suggested by the CDRC before registration.

  8. Once approved by the Research Committee, the candidate registers with IOST by paying the registration and other fees determined by the Research Committee. The fees are charged until the final thesis submission to the department.

  9. PhD students are required to attend courses/seminars organized by the concerned Department (CDRC).

  10. During the PhD research period, the student is not allowed to undertake any other responsibility without the approval of the CDRC, based on the supervisor's recommendation.

  11. PhD students cannot enroll in any other degree program while conducting their PhD research.

  12. The registration of a PhD candidate will be canceled for violations of regulations or unsatisfactory progress.

  13. The Research Center for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST) can conduct PhD programs under IOST's research guidelines. RECAST forwards PhD applications and theses to IOST, which may seek opinions from the relevant CDRC.
