About Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS)

Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) at Maharajgunj Nursing Campus

Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) at Maharajgunj Nursing Campus is a three-year undergraduate nursing program for nurses who have already completed the required Proficiency Certificate Level or diploma-level nursing education. The program operates within the academic framework of the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University.

BNS builds on previous nursing education rather than beginning with an entry-level preparation route. Its academic purpose is to develop nurses for responsibilities in patient care, management, education, and research while allowing concentration in a major nursing field.

At Maharajgunj Nursing Campus, the BNS program is associated with four specialization areas: Adult Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing, and Psychiatric Nursing. Classroom study is supported by practical learning, skills-based preparation, clinical exposure, community field experience, management, and research-related education.

Purpose of the BNS Program

The BNS program of Tribhuvan University prepares nurses for four broad areas of professional responsibility: care provision, management, education, and research.

This structure extends nursing education beyond clinical procedures alone. Students continue developing their nursing knowledge while studying areas connected with health sciences, nursing concepts, community health, teaching and learning, leadership, management, and research.

The three-year format also allows students to progress toward a specialty area. At Maharajgunj Nursing Campus, these specialty areas reflect major fields of nursing practice and academic study.

BNS Specializations

Maharajgunj Nursing Campus has four BNS specialization areas.

Adult Health Nursing

Adult Health Nursing focuses on nursing care for adults across different health conditions. Students in this area develop further academic and practical preparation related to adult nursing, clinical assessment, nursing care, and management of health needs in adult populations.

Adult Health Nursing is represented as a distinct academic area within Maharajgunj Nursing Campus, supporting both general nursing education and specialty-based study.

Community Health Nursing

Community Health Nursing places greater attention on healthcare beyond hospital wards. It addresses individuals, families, communities, health promotion, disease prevention, health education, community assessment, and the organization of local health services.

Community learning associated with the campus includes activities such as:

  • Community health surveys and diagnosis
  • Home visits
  • School health activities
  • Health education
  • Behaviour-change communication
  • Exposure to local healthcare organizations
  • Leadership and management activities in community settings

Students may participate in concurrent and residential community postings as part of field-based nursing education.

Child Health Nursing

Child Health Nursing focuses on the health and nursing care of infants, children, and related family needs.

Academic and practical learning in this field is supported by pediatric nursing teaching, simulation-based preparation, clinical practice, and community activities. BNS students in Child Health Nursing have been included in practical learning environments such as pediatric hospital services and primary healthcare settings.

Learning activities can include case-based work, health education, child-health assessment, and supervised clinical practice.

Psychiatric Nursing

Psychiatric Nursing focuses on nursing care related to mental health and psychiatric conditions. It is one of the four major BNS specialization areas at Maharajgunj Nursing Campus.

The campus has a dedicated Psychiatric Nursing academic area, and psychiatric nursing forms part of its undergraduate nursing environment. Study in this field connects nursing knowledge with mental-health care, communication, assessment, and supervised practice.

Eligibility for BNS

Applicants for Bachelor of Nursing Science must have completed the required prior nursing education.

The eligibility requirements include:

  • Completion of Nursing Proficiency Certificate Level or Diploma Level.
  • A minimum of 50 percent marks or 2.4 CGPA in the qualifying nursing program.
  • Registration with the Nepal Nursing Council.
  • Fulfillment of the applicable MECEE-BL and Medical Education Commission admission requirements.

BNS is therefore intended for candidates who already have a nursing educational background. It is not the same entry route as B.Sc. Nursing, which has a separate eligibility framework.

Candidates must satisfy both the academic eligibility criteria and the prevailing conditions of the national admission system for the concerned intake.

MECEE-BL Entrance and Admission

Admission to BNS follows the national undergraduate medical education framework administered by the Medical Education Commission.

Eligible applicants are required to participate in the applicable MECEE-BL process.

The admission framework covers:

  • Academic eligibility
  • Common entrance examination
  • Merit ranking
  • Matching
  • Institutional allocation
  • Scholarship arrangements
  • Reservation provisions
  • Seat allocation
  • Fee structure
  • Admission procedures
  • Enrollment requirements

Candidates must meet the required entrance standard and proceed through the applicable merit and matching system. Entrance qualification alone does not replace the subsequent allocation and admission procedures.

Seats, fees, scholarships, reservation arrangements, matching procedures, and other admission conditions follow prevailing MEC decisions and the applicable admission calendar. Seat numbers associated with an earlier intake should not be treated as a permanent allocation because MEC determines seats for the relevant admission cycle.

MECEE-BL Examination Pattern for BNS

The BNS entrance examination structure associated with MECEE-BL uses single-best-response multiple-choice questions.

Examination Component Structure
Question Type Single-best-response MCQ
Number of Questions 200
Full Marks 200
Options Four options per question
Duration 3 hours
Cognitive Distribution Recall 30%, Understanding 50%, Application 20%

The subject distribution includes nursing core areas, basic and integrated health sciences, and mental agility.

Major nursing areas represented in the examination include:

  • Community Health Nursing
  • Adult Health Nursing
  • Child Health Nursing
  • Midwifery and Gynaecological Nursing
  • Fundamentals of Nursing
  • Leadership and Management
  • Behaviour Science and Mental Health

Basic and Integrated Health Science also forms part of the examination, along with Mental Agility Test components covering verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, logical sequencing, and abstract or spatial reasoning.

Candidates should follow the examination instructions applicable to their admission cycle because entrance procedures are governed by the prevailing MEC framework.

Academic Structure of BNS

The BNS program extends over three academic years. Its study pattern combines foundational nursing knowledge with advanced nursing subjects, teaching, management, research, and specialization.

Areas represented across the BNS academic structure include:

  • Integrated Basic Health Sciences
  • Nursing Concepts and Principles
  • Adult Health Nursing
  • Child Health Nursing
  • Geriatric Nursing
  • Social Science Applied to Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing
  • Midwifery
  • Psychiatric Nursing
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Health Economics and Nursing
  • Leadership and Management
  • Research Applied to Nursing
  • Specialty nursing study

The course includes theory and practical components in several nursing areas. Students therefore continue academic study while also applying nursing knowledge through supervised practical learning.

The specialty component allows greater concentration within the nursing field selected under the program structure.

Practical and Clinical Learning

BNS education at Maharajgunj Nursing Campus is supported by classroom teaching, simulation-based skills preparation, community work, and clinical practice.

The campus has fundamental and simulation-based skills facilities that support nursing practice before and alongside direct clinical exposure.

Clinical-practice environments associated with the campus cover different areas of healthcare, including teaching-hospital services, adult care, child health, mental health, maternal and women's health, cardiac care, cancer care, and other specialized services.

Health institutions connected with the campus's wider clinical learning environment include Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Kanti Children's Hospital, mental-health services, maternity and women's health services, and other specialized healthcare centers.

The exact clinical placement depends on the specialization, academic plan, learning requirements, and arrangements applicable to the concerned group of students.

Community-Based Nursing Education

Community learning is particularly significant for BNS students concentrating in Community Health Nursing, although community-health education also supports the wider nursing curriculum.

Maharajgunj Nursing Campus uses both concurrent and residential community postings. Field-based activities provide students with opportunities to observe and participate in healthcare outside institutional hospital settings.

Community learning may involve:

  • Community assessment
  • Home visits
  • School health programs
  • Health education activities
  • Communication for health-related behaviour
  • Exposure to primary and local healthcare services
  • Community-level leadership and management practice

This experience connects nursing education with preventive care, population health, families, schools, local health institutions, and community health systems.

Skills and Academic Development

Because BNS students enter with previous nursing education, the program is structured to extend existing professional preparation.

Through general and specialty study, students develop further competence in areas such as:

  • Nursing assessment and care
  • Specialty nursing practice
  • Health education
  • Community health
  • Patient and family communication
  • Teaching and learning
  • Nursing leadership
  • Management
  • Research
  • Clinical decision-making within supervised practice
  • Health-service organization

The inclusion of research, management, and education is important because BNS prepares students for nursing responsibilities extending beyond direct bedside care.

Scholarships, Seats, and Fees

BNS falls within the national medical education system for undergraduate admission, seat allocation, scholarships, and fees.

Scholarship arrangements operate according to the applicable medical education legislation, regulations, and MEC procedures. Scholarship distribution includes open and reserved-category provisions under the prevailing system.

Maharajgunj Nursing Campus has operated BNS across its four major specialty areas, but the number of seats available in any particular admission cycle is subject to MEC determination.

The same applies to:

  • Total intake
  • Specialty-wise seat allocation
  • Scholarship seats
  • Reservation categories
  • Paying seats
  • Foreign-category seats
  • Fee structure

Applicants should therefore use the MEC allocation and admission provisions applicable to the specific intake rather than treating an earlier seat matrix or fee structure as permanent.

Learning Facilities

BNS students study within the wider nursing education environment of Maharajgunj Nursing Campus.

Academic and student-learning facilities include:

  • Fundamental skills laboratory
  • Simulation-based skills laboratory
  • Classrooms with teaching technology
  • Library resources
  • Internet-supported academic facilities
  • Community field arrangements
  • Clinical-practice settings
  • Hostel facilities
  • Transportation support for field and observational activities

The campus library supports nursing study and research through print and electronic academic resources. Practical facilities complement classroom learning by providing space for nursing skill development and preparation for clinical work.

Professional Licensing and Registration

BNS applicants are already required to hold the applicable nursing registration for entry into the program. Professional regulation remains important after further academic qualification as well.

The Nepal Nursing Council regulates nursing education standards, professional licensing, and registration within its mandate.

Completion of BNS represents an additional university-level academic qualification. Professional practice remains subject to the licensing, registration, and regulatory requirements applicable to the concerned nursing role.

Further Academic Pathway

BNS also provides an academic route toward postgraduate nursing education.

Graduates who meet the applicable requirements may proceed to programs such as Master in Nursing. Postgraduate admission has its own eligibility, professional experience, entrance, merit, and matching requirements.

Maharajgunj Nursing Campus itself offers postgraduate nursing study in specialty areas including Adult Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Women Health and Development, and Critical Care Nursing.

BNS therefore sits between initial professional nursing education and advanced specialty study. Its three-year structure combines broader bachelor-level nursing education with a major specialty, practical learning, leadership, teaching, management, community health, and research.
