Republic Day Ganatantra Diwas of Nepal

Today is the 15th of Jestha. Republic Day is the day when the federal democratic-republican system of government is started so that all the power of the state is vested in the people. The day the federal democratic republican system of governance was declared in the country, formally ending the autocratic unitary monarchy.

From the first Constituent Assembly elected by the people, the end of the autocratic monarchy was formally announced and the beginning of the federal democratic republican system of governance was announced in Nepal.

Thousands of sacrifices, and millions of citizens took to the streets, Republic Day is being celebrated across the country today by organizing various programs.

On the occasion of the 15th Republic Day, President Bidyadevi Bhandari expressed her best wishes for strengthening national unity and motivating all to move forward on the path of prosperity including social justice.

In a congratulatory message issued today on the occasion of Republic Day, President Bhandari wished happiness, peace, and prosperity to all Nepali brothers and sisters at home and abroad.

The message said, "On this historic day, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish them all the best in their future endeavors."

The real message of the republic is to bring meaningful and positive change in the lives of the people and move Nepal forward as a developed nation with a strong and self-reliant economy.

We have been celebrating the 15th of Jestha every year as Republic Day to commemorate the historic day when the Federal Democratic Republic was declared in Nepal. It is mentioned that the basic feature of the republic is to transform the system of governance based on the dynastic tradition into a system run by the representatives elected by the people through the exercise of the sovereign power vested in the people.

As envisaged in our constitution to institutionalize the democratic-republican system of governance to the depths of the society, the local level election has been held on April 12. From this, the message is that the republican system of governance is gradually evolving as our social and political way of life.

"I am confident that Republic Day will give us more impetus to build a socialist-oriented economic system by practically implementing the basic rights of education, health, food security, drinking water, sanitation, environment protection, and other fundamental rights provided by the Constitution of Nepal," the message said.

Expressing respect to the senior leaders of the political parties leading the movement for political change in the country at different times, President Bhandari highly appreciated the contribution of the people, civil society, and political activists in the movement and paid a heartfelt tribute to the immortal martyrs who sacrificed their precious lives for the establishment of a democratic republic.
