Overview

Runtigadhi Rural Municipality is one of the ten local levels within Rolpa District of Lumbini Province, under the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Named after the sacred birthplace, “Runti,” and the spiritual site, “Gadhi,” where Mahaprabhu meditated, its administrative center is located in Holeri, Rolpa. It lies 40 km northwest of the district headquarters, Liwang.

This municipality comprises nine wards. It is bordered by Rolpa Municipality and Sunil Smriti Rural Municipality to the east; Dang and Salyan districts to the west; Triveni Rural Municipality to the north; and Dang and Pyuthan districts to the south.

Geographical Features

Runtigadhi is a mid-hill rural municipality situated along the Mahabharat range. The area offers diverse natural beauty, with altitudes ranging from 750 meters to 2150 meters above sea level. It covers an area of 232.68 sq. km and lies between 82º23’45.567” to 82º37’50.126” E longitude and 28º5’35.629” to 28º10’48.940” N latitude.

The soil is predominantly sandy due to its location within the Chure hills. The climate is temperate, with temperatures ranging from 0°C in winter to 30°C in summer. The average annual rainfall is around 125 cm.

Historical Background and Naming

Located 40 km from Liwang, the district headquarters, this rural municipality falls in the western region of Nepal. The name ‘Runtigadhi’ is derived from ‘Runti,’ the birthplace of the revered Swargadwari Mahaprabhu, and ‘Gadhi,’ the site of his meditation and an essential fort during Nepal’s unification period.

Social and Cultural Aspects

Runtigadhi is culturally and socially rich. The Magar community is predominant, followed by Brahmin, Chhetri, Thakuri, Sanyasi, Kami, Damai, Sarki, and Gharti communities.

The municipality observes a peaceful coexistence of Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian religious followers. Major festivals include Dashain, Tihar, Janai Purnima, and Buddha Jayanti. Traditional dances and music such as Panche Baja, Kaura, Sorathi, Mayur Naach, Sarangi Naach, Bhaiyaure, Balan, and Chudka are preserved and practiced.

After the administrative restructuring in 2073 BS, the previous seven wards in Rolpa were reorganized into nine wards under this municipality.

1. Literacy

Both males and females show satisfactory literacy levels. However, the female illiteracy rate is still notable at 87.077%.

2. Marital Status

Among individuals aged 10 years and above, 52.6% are married, while 44.6% remain unmarried.

3. Residence and Migration

Approximately 96.818% of residents have migrated from other areas. Ward No. 5 records the highest number of settlers from outside the area.

4. Birth and Death Records

In the last 12 months, Wards 1 and 3 had the highest birth rates. Meanwhile, only 4.16% of households experienced a death, with Wards 2 and 8 reporting the highest mortality.

5. Health

About 65.168% of residents first visit a pharmacy when ill. This highlights the need for improved health services and facilities in the area.

Runtigadhi Rural Municipality was officially established on Falgun 27, 2073 BS, merging the former VDCs of Jhenam, Sakhi, Jaulipokhari, Masina, Dubring, Jedbang (wards 7, 8, and 9), and Duwidanda.
