Geographical Location

Sunil Smriti Rural Municipality is located at an altitude of 660 meters to 2960 meters above sea level. This Rural Municipality is located in the eastern part of Rolpa District, about 29 km from the district headquarters in Liwang.

It is bounded on the east by Sunchahari Rural Municipality and Lungri Rural Municipality and on the west by Rolpa Municipality and Runtigadhi Rural Municipality.

Similarly, Sunil Smriti Rural Municipality is bounded on the north by Sunchahari Rural Municipality and Rolpa Municipality and on the south by Pyuthan District. The total area of this Rural Municipality is 156.55 sq km.

The newly formed Sunil Smriti Rural Municipality is a historically, naturally, and culturally important area. According to the state restructuring of the Government of Nepal, Suvarnavati Rural Municipality was established in 2073 BS by integrating Ward No. 1 of Ghodagaun, Khungri, Mijhing, Gajul, Tebang, Aresh, and Fagam VDCs.

When Nepal was a twenty-two and twenty-four state, the historical sites of Khungri Kot and Gajul Kot, ruled by the Sen and Thakuri kings of that time, are still preserved. In addition to this, historical places like Ratamato of Ghodagaun and Tebang are present in this village with their own characteristics.

Sunilsmriti Rural Municipality is a place where religion, history, and natural beauty come together. It’s known for its sacred sites, ancient landmarks, and stories that have shaped both the past and present.

One of the most respected religious sites in the area is the Matripureshwari Temple. According to the Skanda Purana and Swasthani, this is believed to be the place where a part of Sati Devi’s body is said to have fallen. Many pilgrims visit here to connect with that powerful legacy of faith.

Another important site is the Bhairabeshwar Mahadev, believed to be the origin place of Lord Bhairav. For those drawn to spiritual exploration, these places offer both meaning and peace.

Khunggrikot Palace and Local Legends

In Ward No. 2, you’ll find the historic Khunggrikot Palace, a remnant of the Baise-Chaubise era. It's not just a building—it’s a silent witness to centuries of change. From local rulers to resistance movements, the palace tells stories of bravery and transformation.

Visitors can feel the connection between past and present, especially when walking through these aged stones and imagining the lives once lived here.

Remembering the Past

Sunilsmriti is also home to locations that carry the weight of more recent history. Several conflict-era battle sites are now places of reflection and learning:

  • Malarani Shanti Batika – a peaceful garden reminding us of the cost of conflict

  • Sunilsmriti Park in Ward No. 6 – built in honor of Martyr Sunil, this space preserves the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

These landmarks offer visitors a chance to understand the region’s journey through struggle, sacrifice, and eventually peace.

Nature’s Touch - Caves, Waterfalls, and Ponds

This rural municipality is also blessed with raw natural beauty. It serves as a gateway to Rolpa, with the Chaturbhuj religious area drawing spiritual seekers and nature lovers alike.

Some of the standout natural spots include:

  • Hidden caves surrounded by forest

  • Flowing waterfalls that offer perfect day trips

  • Quiet ponds that reflect the sky and calm the mind

These spots not only attract travelers but also remind locals of the gifts their land holds.

A Place Full of Possibilities

There is strong potential here—not just for religious or historical tourism, but also for archaeological exploration and war tourism. Each site has a story, and together they offer a rich experience for anyone interested in culture, history, or nature.

Why Tourism Matters Here

Tourism isn’t just about travel. For Sunilsmriti, it’s about opportunity. With proper care and promotion of these sites, tourism can bring about real change, helping to strengthen the local economy and support community development.

This is more than just a destination. It’s a place where history lives, nature thrives, and every visit helps shape a stronger future for the people who call it home.
