Debate Begins in Kathmandu on AI Use in Higher Education
Kathmandu. A debate on “Mapping Responsible and Innovative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education” began in the capital on Wednesday, organized by Tribhuvan University.
Launched with financial support from the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, the program brought together experts who stressed the need for policy arrangements to ensure the prudent use of artificial intelligence and prevent its misuse.
The program is being attended by vice chancellors, professors, and researchers from universities in Nepal, China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Bhutan, and other countries.
Prof. Dr. Sushil Bahadur Bajracharya, Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, said higher education should be aligned with the global context through the conscious use of artificial intelligence.
He said professors and students should be made skilled in the use of artificial intelligence, its application should be focused on institutional development, research capacity should be enhanced, and the government should formulate policies and laws to make its use easier.
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chang Miaoming said the development of artificial intelligence has brought changes to the human thinking system. He noted that the Chinese government has increased investment in research to ensure the sustainable use of artificial intelligence and address possible challenges.
Stating that artificial intelligence has brought conceptual changes to higher education, he said cooperation and collaboration among countries are necessary for the positive and human-centered use of technology.
An international institution related to online education was also launched in Nepal during the program. Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Shankar Prasad Khanal and UNESCO Deputy Director B. Xiaohan signed the memorandum of understanding to launch the institution.
