Bird Flu (H5N8) Confirmed in Kathmandu:

Doctors have urged to be more aware saying that bird flu has been seen in Kathmandu. Bird flu (H5N8) has been confirmed in ducks and turkeys in Sanglekhola Futung of Tarkeshwor Municipality-7 in Kathmandu.

According to the Department of Veterinary Services, the bird flu has been confirmed when samples of turkeys and ducks reared by local farmers in Futung were tested using the RTPCR method at the Central Veterinary Disease Investigation Laboratory.

Livestock raised in the area has been destroyed after bird flu was confirmed on Friday. The department said 1,865 ducks, 622 chickens, 32 chickens, 25 turkeys, 542 eggs, and 75 kg grains were destroyed. A few days ago, the import of poultry products was banned in Nepal after the outbreak of bird flu in India. The department has stated that it will tighten the bird flu in Kathmandu.

With the outbreak of bird flu in various states of India over the past month, the risk of the disease has also increased in Nepal and all the agencies have been kept on alert keeping in view the risk of the disease spreading.

The Department of Animal Husbandry has stated that the import of contagious goods from India has been completely banned. The department has requested that the transportation of birds and poultry products should be done only after obtaining a health check-up and a veterinary certificate.

Similarly, it has been requested to adopt the biological safety method in the farm premises. The department has issued a press release asking all poultry farmers to pay special attention to personal hygiene to disinfect the farm premises regularly. The department has asked to immediately inform the nearest animal service body if any bird falls ill or dies in any poultry farm or other poultry or sale place.

According to doctors, various studies have shown that the bird flu virus can die at 72 degrees Celsius even if the meat is eaten. Cooked food should be cooked up to 100 degrees.
