Can Consulting Services Guides Students Through New Canadian Study Permit Policies

In a strategic move to better prepare international students for life in Canada, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, has announced a pivotal adjustment to the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants, effective January 1, 2024. This decision, responding to the evolving economic landscape, aims to align financial prerequisites with the current cost of living in the country.

The long-standing cost-of-living requirement, stagnant at $10,000 for a single applicant since the early 2000s, will experience a substantial increase. Starting in 2024, a single applicant must demonstrate financial readiness by showcasing $20,635, representing 75% of the low-income cut-off (LICO). This requirement, in addition to covering the first year of tuition and travel costs, seeks to prevent instances where students arrive in Canada only to discover their funds are insufficient for a sustained stay. Notably, this change will be applicable to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.

Can Consulting Services, under the guidance of Engineer Hari Khatri, is proactively informing students and parents about these policy changes instituted by the Canadian government. Engineer Hari Khatri, currently in Nepal, is personally meeting with individual applicants to provide comprehensive information into the updated policies. He emphasized the challenges faced by a large number of international students in securing accommodation and employment due to a lack of awareness about job and housing search platforms such as Indeed, Learn4Good, Coliving.com, and Kijiji.

Er. Hari Khatri underscored that starting January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living requirement for a Canadian study permit will rise to $20,635, representing 75% of the low-income cut-off. This adjustment aims to ensure financial preparedness and prevent students from encountering insufficient funds upon arrival. The revised requirement applies to new applications, covering the initial year of tuition and travel costs.
