Increasing Number of Students Opting for English Medium in Public Schools in Kathmandu Metropolis

With the rise in popularity of English as a global language, more and more students in Kathmandu Metropolitan City are opting for public schools that offer English medium education at an affordable fee.

Rising Attractiveness of Public Schools Offering English Medium Education

Ramprasad Subedi, head of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City education department, revealed that the number of students enrolling in public schools has increased since the schools started offering education in English medium at a low fee. This trend is particularly popular among students who want to study up to class 5 and then move to class 6 in private schools. However, 25% of new students who are enrolling in public schools are from class 6 to class 8.

Scholarships for Higher Education Studies

The attractiveness of public schools offering English medium education has further increased because students can get scholarships for higher education studies after passing SEE from these schools.

Graded Curriculum for Enrolling More Students

KMC is preparing to enroll more students for new admissions by grading subjects like Nepali, English, science, mathematics, and social studies based on the curriculum. A total of 100 full marks questions will be asked from these subjects with a weightage of 20 marks each.

Community Schools in Kathmandu Metropolitan City

Of the 89 community schools in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, 50% of them offer education in English medium. Out of the 89 community schools, 59 are secondary schools and 30 are primary schools. A total of 52,000 students are studying in these schools. Additionally, 120,000 students are studying in 540 private schools.

Initiatives Taken by KMC to Improve SEE Results

KMC has taken initiatives to improve the SEE results of students studying in public schools operating in their area. For the first time this year, KMC appointed teaching facilitators for mathematics, science, English, social, and Nepali subjects and conducted extra classes for two months.
