Kathmandu University Pioneers Introduction of Hydrogen Cars in Nepal

Kathmandu, November 6, 2023 – Kathmandu University (KU) has taken a groundbreaking step towards sustainable transportation by introducing the first hydrogen-powered car to Nepal. On November 4, 2023, the university unveiled a Hyundai hydrogen vehicle, a significant milestone in Nepal's automotive and energy sectors.

Strategic Partnership and Investment

• Collaborative Effort: The arrival of the hydrogen car is a result of a collaborative effort between Kathmandu University and Nepal Oil Corporation.
• Financial Details: KU has invested 33 thousand US dollars (equivalent to 43.89 lakh Nepalese rupees) to bring this innovative technology to Nepal.

Research and Development Initiatives

• Dedicated Hydrogen Lab: Under the leadership of Dr. Biraj Singh Thapa, head of the Green Hydrogen Lab at KU, the institution is dedicating resources to research on hydrogen as a viable alternative fuel.
• Establishment of Research Facilities: The 90th meeting of the Kathmandu University Assembly concluded with a decision to set up a research lab for hydrogen production.

Infrastructure for Hydrogen Fuel

• Hydrogen Refilling System: A hydrogen refilling station has been established within the university premises to facilitate the charging of hydrogen vehicles.
• Inauguration Plans: There are plans for the Prime Minister to officially inaugurate the hydrogen car post-Tihar festival.

Advocating for Policy Support

• Harnessing Surplus Electricity: Dr. Thapa highlighted the potential of using Nepal's surplus electricity to produce hydrogen fuel.
• Need for Government Policy: The absence of a policy or law regarding alternative fuels in Nepal has been identified, prompting a call for government action to develop policies suitable for the adoption and production of hydrogen energy.
