‘My School as the Foundation of Innovation and Production’ Program in 23 Community Schools of Kawasoti: Learning Exchange Among Students
Under the Gandaki Province Chief Minister Innovation Partnership Program, the “My School as the Foundation of Innovation and Production” program is being implemented in 23 community schools of Kawasoti Municipality. Through this program, schools are practicing various technologies and production activities, while students from one school are visiting another school to exchange experiences and learning.
Students of Nepal National Basic School in Kawasoti-11 have produced biogas. During an interaction, Kushal Sunar, a Grade 8 student of the school, said biogas is produced by decomposing a mixture of organic waste and water in an oxygen-proof tank. He clarified that only decomposable kitchen waste should be placed in it, as acidic materials kill the bacteria that produce methane, sulfide, and nitrogen gases, preventing gas production.
Similarly, Chandeshwari Secondary School in Kawasoti-17 has built an “eco pond” at the school for innovation and productivity. According to project focal teacher Lekhnath Poudel, the fish raised in the pond will be used as nutritious food in the school’s midday meal program. The students themselves have also made a machine to produce feed required for the fish.
Student Pranav Basyal said that a waterfall and fountain system has been arranged using a motor to keep the water moving and maintain the oxygen level for the fish, while inlet and outlet systems have been arranged to clean the water when it becomes dirty.
Likewise, students of Janata Secondary School in Kawasoti-16 have reused discarded old paper, while students of Tribhuvan Bal Secondary School, Dhoki, have made a robot using robotic technology, which has drawn special interest from students.
According to Rajan Pandey, officer at the Education, Youth and Sports Section of the municipality, schools within the municipality have implemented the following projects:
Dipendra Basic School and Janakalyan Secondary School: Construction of solar dryers
Nepal National Basic School: Biogas plant
Maharaja Basic School: Compost bin
Navadurga Basic School: Fruit nursery
Shiva Secondary School: Preparation of organic fertilizer from decomposable waste and construction of a nursery
Janavikas Basic School: Compost fertilizer and small scientific equipment construction
Jeevanjyoti Secondary School: Turmeric farming and processing unit
Sahid Smriti Secondary School: Production of seasonal and off-season vegetables through plastic tunnels
Saraswati Secondary School: Black turmeric cultivation and processing
Kalika Secondary School: Digital innovation lab
Janata Secondary School: Construction of an integrated greenhouse
Gyanodaya Secondary School: Production of organic pesticides
These projects have attempted to make schools not only places for study but also centers of learning, research, and production.
Program coordinator and Assistant Principal of Shiva Model Secondary School, Deepak Bista, said the program being implemented in community schools, which have often been criticized for being limited to examinations, paper-based results, and certificates, has begun an effort to change traditional thinking.
