Literacy Report of Seven Rural Municipalities in Humla

Although all seven rural municipalities in Humla have been declared literate, a total of 1,400 individuals remain illiterate. According to the National Literacy Standards 2076 BS, a district can be declared literate if at least 95% of the population is literate. Based on this threshold, the district received the designation despite the remaining illiterate population.

The Education Development and Coordination Unit, Humla, reported that 1,400 individuals aged between 15 and 59 years are still illiterate. Currently, 96.04% of the district’s population falls under the literate category, with 3.96% remaining illiterate.

Out of the total population of 35,354 in the specified age group, 33,954 are literate, as stated by Unit Head Yogesh Ale Magar. The number of illiterate individuals in each rural municipality is as follows:

  • Namkha Rural Municipality – 111 illiterate

  • Simkot Rural Municipality – 371 illiterate

  • Kharpunath Rural Municipality – 294 illiterate

  • Sarkegad Rural Municipality – 314 illiterate

  • Chankheli Rural Municipality – 192 illiterate

  • Adanchuli Rural Municipality – 192 illiterate

  • Tanjakot Rural Municipality – 66 illiterate (lowest)
