Minister Rekha Sharma Advocates for Compulsory IT Education in Nepal

The Communication and Information Technology Minister of Nepal, Rekha Sharma, recently stated that the study of information technology should be made compulsory up to higher education. She emphasized that despite the increased use of technology, there is a lack of necessary knowledge, skills, and awareness, making it necessary to mandate its study in higher education.

Importance of IT Education

Minister Sharma believes that the mandatory study of information technology in higher education will help students acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in today's digital world. She stressed that with the increased use of technology worldwide, Nepal needs to keep up and prepare its citizens to participate in the global digital economy.

Need for Laws and Policies

Minister Sharma also highlighted the importance of having laws and policies related to the use of technology in Nepal. Although technology developed worldwide is being used in Nepal, the country lacks the necessary laws and policies to govern its use. Therefore, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has prioritized the creation of such policies and laws.

Cyber Security Policy

The Minister also shared that the cyber security policy was made in 2076 and sent to parliament in 2078. However, with the new elections, the old bill became inactive. She assured that the work of creating a new cyber security policy is currently underway, and if passed, it would pave the way for the creation of a cyber security law.

Increasing Awareness

Minister Sharma also discussed the need to increase awareness of what can and cannot be posted on social media. She stated that the lack of awareness about the proper use of social media has led to an increase in incidents of violence. She believes that the use of technology can help convey the provisions mentioned in the constitution and laws to the people, thus reducing such incidents.

Overall, Minister Rekha Sharma's call for compulsory IT education in Nepal is a significant step in preparing the country for the digital future. The Ministry's efforts towards creating laws and policies related to technology use and increasing awareness about its proper use will help ensure a safer and more productive digital environment in the country.
