National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) to Launch MBBS Program
Kathmandu, [17th December 2023] – The National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) has announced the introduction of undergraduate courses, including the highly sought-after Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. This development follows the Ministry of Health and Population's strategy to incorporate medical education into government hospitals, symbolizing a significant shift in the country's healthcare education system.
Expanding Educational Horizons at NAMS and Bir Hospital
Currently renowned for its Master's degree (MD) programs, NAMS is now extending its academic offerings to the undergraduate level. This expansion is a part of a broader initiative to enhance medical education in Nepal and make it more accessible to a wider range of students.
In conjunction with NAMS, Bir Hospital, one of Kathmandu's prominent healthcare institutions, is also set to commence undergraduate medical teaching. This move is expected to provide a more comprehensive and practical learning experience for medical students, leveraging the hospital's resources and expertise.
A Dedicated Committee for Seamless Implementation
To oversee this critical transition, NAMS has established a seven-member committee chaired by Prof. Dr. Lochan Karki. The committee includes distinguished medical professionals such as Dr. Ashesh Dhungana, Dr. Pawan Hamal, Dr. Sandhya Chapagain, and Dr. Anupama Karki, along with representative members from the Administration and Accounts Branch.
This committee is tasked with conducting a thorough study on various aspects critical to the successful implementation of the program, including infrastructure, manpower, and financial considerations. Their findings will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of medical education at NAMS and Bir Hospital.
Scholarships for Deserving Students
In a move to promote inclusivity and support talented students from underprivileged backgrounds, NAMS has announced that once the undergraduate courses commence, deserving students will be eligible for a 75 percent scholarship. This initiative aims to alleviate financial barriers and open doors for more students to pursue medical education.
NAMS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Basnet emphasized the institution's commitment to making medical education more accessible. He stated that a significant portion of students, especially in courses like MBBS, Nursing, and Pharmacy, will be able to benefit from these scholarships. The institution is set to request the Medical Education Commission to finalize the number of seats available under this scheme.
With preparations underway, the academic community in Kathmandu eagerly anticipates the positive impact these changes will bring. The introduction of undergraduate courses at NAMS and Bir Hospital is poised to not only enhance the quality of medical education in Nepal but also to create new opportunities for aspiring medical professionals across the nation.
