Nepal Sanskrit University’s Newly Appointed Rector and Registrar Take Oath and Assume Office

The newly appointed Rector of Nepal Sanskrit University, Prof. Dr. Jagannath Regmi, and Registrar Prof. Dr. Nawaraj Kattel have taken the oath of office and secrecy and assumed their respective responsibilities. At a ceremony held on Bhadra 26 on the premises of the University’s Central Office in Beljhundi, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bhim Prasad Khatiwada administered the oath and welcomed them.

The Prime Minister of Nepal and Chancellor of the University had appointed them only a few days earlier with the aim of moving forward work that had remained stalled for a long time. The appointments were made on the recommendation of a three-member recommendation committee coordinated by Prof. Dr. Madhav Sharan Upadhyay.

At the welcome and assumption-of-office program, chaired by Tikaram Budha, Director of the National Culture Study Institute Centre, with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khatiwada as the chief guest, the newly appointed officials delivered remarks outlining their commitments. Rector Prof. Dr. Jagannath Regmi emphasized the University’s academic advancement and dynamism.

Similarly, newly appointed Registrar Prof. Dr. Nawaraj Kattel expressed his commitment to working with a focus on the University’s protection, transparency, impartiality, and goodwill. Prof. Dr. Kattel, who has been dedicated to serving the Sanskrit sector for the past 30 years and has also worked through the Jayatu Sanskritam organization, said he would take initiatives to address the problems faced by Gurukuls. Before assuming office, he visited Trilokeshwar Mahadev Temple and offered worship.

At the program, Khim Bahadur Sen, Head of the General Administration and Property Management Division; Prof. Arjun Bhattarai; Dhan Bahadur Basnet, Chair of the Beljhundi Land Management Committee; Chandra Bahadur Dangi, Chair of the Beljhundi Area Development Committee; Hari Prasad DC; Muralidhar Dahal; Bhagawat Sharma; and others welcomed the newly appointed officials and extended their best wishes.

Academic Status of Gurukuls and the University

According to information provided at the program, more than 200 Gurukuls are currently operating in Nepal. The government has been providing grants of Rs. 1.8 million (1,800,000) to these Gurukuls based on evaluation.

Similarly, 14 constituent Vidyapeethas are currently operating under Nepal Sanskrit University, along with other affiliated Vidyapeethas. The University offers instruction in classical subjects such as Veda, Grammar, Jyotisha, Nyaya, Literature, Purva Mimamsa, Uttara Mimamsa, Dharmashastra, and Tantra. Modern subjects including Economics, Nepali, Political Science, English, Maithili, Hindi, and Mathematics are also taught.

In technical education, the University is also running a Bachelor’s program in Ayurveda (BAMS) and a one-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program. In addition, the University operates PhD programs and undertakes the publication of research journals, a Sanskrit-Nepali dictionary, and Sanskrit texts.
