Kathmandu, 2082 Poush 18 -A provision is being prepared so that students who complete their studies at a university operating in Nepal will not need to obtain an equivalency certificate when they go for employment or enroll at another university for further study.
At present, students who have studied at any university in Nepal must obtain equivalency from Tribhuvan University (TU) when they seek government employment or go to another university for further study.
This arrangement is not included in any law, but the process has continued to this day based on a Cabinet decision made during the Panchayat era. Since 2030 BS, TU has been carrying out this work in line with the Cabinet’s decision.
Currently, all federal universities operating within Nepal are run under federal Acts passed by Parliament. In most of these universities, the Prime Minister serves as Chancellor and the Minister for Education, Science and Technology serves as Pro-Chancellor.
However, even though they are operated under similar laws, students have been criticizing the fact that one university cannot trust the academic certificates issued by another university.
In addition, due to the cumbersome process required to obtain an equivalency certificate from TU, service seekers have been facing difficulties.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has made final preparations to remove this arrangement. According to a ministry official, the necessary preparations are underway.
TU has also been urging the government to reconsider, saying that issuing equivalency certificates is not its responsibility, yet it has only had to bear the blame.
