New Curriculum for Classes 1 to 12 Will be Implemented in Phases by 2080 BS

The new curriculum will be implemented in all school level classes 1 to 12 by 2080 BS. The course will be implemented phase-wise. Director-General of the Curriculum Development Center (CDC), Keshav Dahal, informed that the new curriculum will be implemented in all classes within four years as per the plan to implement phase-wise at the school level. The new curriculum has been implemented in class 1 and 11 in the current academic session.

According to the center, a new curriculum will be implemented in classes 2, 3, 6, and 12 in the academic session of 2078 BS and in classes 4, 7, and 9 in 2079 BS. After that the new curriculum will be implemented in classes 5, 8, and 10 in 2080 BS, the new curriculum will be implemented in all school level classes, said Director General Dahal.

He informed that there will be no problem as the court has paved the way for the implementation of the new curriculum and the government will move ahead in its implementation. There was confusion for almost three months after a writ was filed in the Supreme Court against the government's decision to implement a new curriculum in class 11. The Supreme Court has paved the way for the government to implement the new curriculum on Poush 12.

Director-General of the Center, Dahal, informed that it has been moved forward phase-wise due to problems in implementing the new curriculum in all classes at once. The goal is to implement it in a phase-wise manner as there will be problems in curriculum development, textbook publishing, etc. when implemented at once. Director-General Dahal says that it will be easier to implement from a managerial point of view.

Meanwhile, the center is going to train the students of class 11 where the new curriculum has been implemented. An action plan has been formulated to train teachers who teach three compulsory subjects. From now on, in class 11, Nepali, English and social studies, and life skills education has been made compulsory in three subjects. From this time, social studies and lifelong learning have been added as compulsory subjects. Provision has been made to teach this subject in Nepali medium. Also, Nepali society, social environment, and life skills education are included in the textbook. In this situation, there is a need to orientate the class 11 teachers.

In the first phase, it is planned to train the teachers of compulsory subjects and then the teachers of elective subjects. It is planned to inform the teachers about the evaluation, curriculum structure, and other issues in the new curriculum.

It remains to be decided from which model the training center will be conducted for the teachers at the local or state level.

A few months ago, the department had planned to conduct a training program for class 11 teachers through a virtual medium while the coronavirus (Covid-19) infection was still prevalent. However, the orientation was halted after a legal dispute arose over the new curriculum.
