Panchakanya Secondary School’s ‘Learning While Earning’ Program Effective
The “Learning While Earning” program being operated at Panchakanya Secondary School in Arjunchaupari Rural Municipality–1 has been becoming effective. The program has been launched with financial support from the Ministry of Social Development of the Gandaki Province Government to teach students practical skills alongside their studies.
The school has been providing students with practical training through seasonal vegetable farming on five ropani of land under its ownership. Students who had only seen traditional farming practices have begun applying their learning in practice by participating in kitchen gardens using modern methods.
“We are studying while earning and have been able to take part in practical exercises,” student Aakriti Rokaha said.
After receiving permission from the Ministry of Education in BS 2077, the school has been continuously running a program related to crop science. Among the 31 schools in the rural municipality, Panchakanya Secondary School has been carrying out a different practice. Here, students have also been practicing production and sales while studying in a peaceful environment.
According to Crop Science Coordinator Subas Aryal, the “One Student, One Kitchen Garden” campaign has been expanded to households by providing seeds of various crops through the program. He said the program has brought practical change not only to the school but also to the community.
The school’s campaign has inspired students to become self-reliant along with gaining practical knowledge. At this school, 65 students from Grades 9 to 12 are studying crop science.
A system has been arranged to distribute the income earned from the sale of potatoes, tomatoes, leafy greens, cauliflower, cabbage, honey, and other products produced by the students, with 75 percent going to the students, 20 percent to the school, and 5 percent to the technical assistant.
In the district, crop science is taught at Panchakanya Secondary School as well as Purnamrit Bhawani Secondary School, Waling, and Mahima Secondary School, Harinas. Panchakanya Secondary School has been successful in producing excellent results every year and was honored as the best school in the country in BS 2080.
