A school-focused agriculture awareness campaign has been launched in Tanahun with the objective of producing skilled agricultural human resources, retaining the younger generation within the country, and making them entrepreneurial. The District Agriculture Development Office, Tanahun, has started the campaign from the school level with the message that employment and business opportunities are available in the agriculture sector within Nepal.
Under the first phase of the campaign, an awareness program on “Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture in Nepal: Opportunities and Future” was organized for students of Jana Jyoti Secondary School, Bhimad, located in Bhimad Bazaar of Bhimad Municipality.
According to the Agriculture Development Office, the campaign that began from Bhimad will gradually be expanded to schools in all other local levels of the district. However, due to a lack of budget, the office has stated that the program will be conducted in only two schools in Tanahun this year.
Kiran Pariyar, Crop Protection Officer at the Agriculture Development Office, Tanahun, said that new doors of opportunity have recently opened within the country for those studying agriculture education in Nepal. According to him, there is high demand for agriculture graduates not only in government service, research, and technical fields but also in the private sector, cooperatives, agriculture industries, and livestock farming.
Pariyar said agriculture is no longer merely a traditional subsistence-based occupation. He noted that if agriculture can be made practical and technology-friendly, the situation in which young people have to migrate abroad for employment can come to an end. He said counseling from the school level is necessary to increase youth participation in modern technology, organic farming, and commercial production in the agriculture sector.
Sushmita Gautam, Chief of the Agriculture Section of Bhimad Municipality, said the students were also given practical information on the safe use of chemical pesticides, environmental protection, and sustainable agriculture systems.
The participating students expressed happiness after receiving information from the school level itself about the commercial potential of agriculture and the opportunities available within Nepal.
