Shivapuri Army Command and Staff College Draws Officers from Global Powers
Kathmandu — The Army Command and Staff College in Shivapuri, known for its distinctive geography and environment, is increasingly becoming a major center of attraction for foreign military officers seeking strategic and practical training.
Recently, military officers from developed and powerful countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and India have been participating in study and training programs there.
A total of 92 officers from 10 countries, including Nepal, are taking part in the ongoing 33rd Command and Staff Course at the college. These include military officers from India, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Bangladesh, Kenya, the Maldives, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
Organized by the Ministry of Defence and managed by the Nepali Army, the training provides instruction in subjects such as national, regional, and international strategy, security and military affairs, defence studies, international relations and diplomacy, law, and public administration.
It also includes various exercises and War Games on contemporary security issues, armed conflict, the art of war, force planning, and management. The course has been playing an important role in developing the leadership and strategic thinking of senior and mid-level officers.
More Than 13,000 Trained, Participation from 30 Countries
Established in 2049 B.S., the college has so far seen around 13,000 people complete its Staff College course and military training programs. According to the Nepali Army, this includes around 10,000 Nepalis from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and the National Investigation Department, along with more than 3,000 foreign military officers.
So far, military personnel from 30 different countries have received training there. In particular, the college has built a distinct international identity through its strategic training in jungle warfare, mountain warfare, disaster management, and responses to modern security challenges.
Impact of Peacekeeping and Specialized Experience Main Reasons for Attraction
According to former Nepal Police Inspector General of Police Basant Bahadur Kunwar, who is also an alumnus of the college, it is a matter of pride that Nepal has become an attraction for foreign military personnel for military training and study.
He said foreign officers are drawn there to learn from Nepal’s first-place standing in United Nations peace missions and from the professionalism and outstanding performance demonstrated by Nepali peacekeepers in conflict-affected countries.
Similarly, Nepali Army spokesperson Rajaram Basnet said the Nepali Army’s specialized experience in terrain-based and counterinsurgency training has become an important area of learning for foreign military personnel.
According to him, multinational participation has further contributed to the exchange of experience, shared analysis of security challenges, and the expansion of opportunities for cooperation.
Established as a center producing internationally competitive military leadership, the Shivapuri Army Command and Staff College has now become a strong symbol of the Nepali Army’s professionalism, international cooperation, and quality training.
