Teachers Call on Government to Pass School Education Bill Without Delay

The Nepal Teachers Association (NTA) has once again urged the government to move forward with the School Education Bill, warning that continued delays have left teachers across the country disappointed and deeply concerned.

After years of peaceful protests and repeated negotiations, the government had promised to replace the outdated Education Act of 2028 B.S. with a more relevant law that supports students, teachers, and school staff.

In 2081/82, under the leadership of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, educators organized a 89-day protest campaign in several phases, including a 29-day demonstration focused in Kathmandu. That movement led to a written agreement on 17th Baisakh 2082 between the Federation and the Government of Nepal.

As part of that agreement, the Chief Whips of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, along with the Chairperson of the Education, Health, Information, and Technology Committee, committed to passing the School Education Bill through the House of Representatives by 15th Asar 2082.

Broken Promises Raise Questions

However, as of the 16th of Asar, the Bill hasn’t even been registered in Parliament. This has left many teachers feeling ignored.

The Association has reminded the authorities to take the matter seriously and to act on their commitments. They are calling for immediate approval of the Bill, exactly as agreed.

Growing Pressure to Resume Protests

The NTA expressed concern that the government is once again showing reluctance to follow through. Teachers fear that political interests might now be interfering with the original agreement.

The Federation is being pressed to prepare for another phase of organized struggle if progress is not made.

The Association has asked teachers and staff across the country to remain mentally prepared for what may come. It also made clear that any consequences from further protests would be the government’s responsibility.
