SEE Result 2081: Goma Shrestha's Journey from Brick Kiln to 4 GPA

Goma Shrestha, living in a zinc-roofed hut beside a brick kiln in Sudal, Changunarayan Municipality–8, Bhaktapur, had just returned from helping with rice planting at a local farmer's field when the SEE 2081 results were published last Friday.

She had taken the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) from Mahendragram Secondary School in Changunarayan–8. Naturally, she became eager to check her results upon hearing the news. She hurried online to find out. The result filled her with joy—she had passed with a perfect 4 GPA.

Achieving Excellence from a Community School

Despite studying at a public school, Goma secured a 4 GPA, placing her among the top 30 students in Bhaktapur and earning the highest result within Changunarayan Municipality.

Goma's ancestral home is in Khaniyapani, Ramechhap. At the age of four, she moved with her parents to Bhaktapur. According to her father, Min Bahadur Shrestha, the family relocated from Khaniyapani to Sudal, Bhaktapur, due to financial hardship and to support Goma’s interest in education.

Family Sacrifices for a Daughter’s Education

“On one hand, we were struggling financially; on the other, Goma had shown a strong interest in learning from a young age. So, we left our village and came to Bhaktapur, searching for work. Goma was only four at the time,” said Min Bahadur. “The main reason for leaving Khaniyapani in Ramechhap was to support our daughter’s education.”

In Bhaktapur, Min Bahadur began working at a brick kiln and enrolled Goma at the nearby Mahendragram Secondary School.

Struggles Between Study and Survival

“In Khaniyapani, we had to walk an hour downhill from the hills to reach the school. So even if I had to carry bricks or do heavy labor for daily wages, I was ready to educate my daughter. That’s why we settled in Bhaktapur,” he explained. “I worked at the brick kiln and enrolled her in the school next to it.”

Goma spent her early years growing up around the brick kiln—attending school during the day and playing in the clay yard in the mornings and evenings. As she got older, she started helping her parents, gradually incorporating daily responsibilities into her routine.

By Grade 9, her life was shaped by a fixed pattern of study and labor—school during the day and helping flip bricks in the mornings and evenings.

A Focused Shift in Grade 10

Things changed in Grade 10. “My parents told me to focus more on studies for one year. Since SEE was coming up, the school also emphasized study time. So, I adjusted my routine and started dedicating myself more to my studies. As a result, I was able to achieve this good result,” she shared.

Aspiration to Become a Doctor

Goma stated her ambition is to become a doctor. But she knows that achieving this dream will require hard work and securing a scholarship.

“I plan to pursue Plus Two in Science and aim to get admitted to an MBBS program in one of Nepal’s medical colleges through a scholarship,” she said. “My main goal is to serve my parents, the country, and the people as a good doctor. I understand it will require a lot of hard work, and I am preparing accordingly.” -  RSS
