Tribhuvan Model Secondary School Bardiya Celebrates Cultural Diversity: Students and Teachers in Traditional Attire

The Tribhuvan Model Secondary School in Bhurigaun, Bardiya recently organized a unique program that saw students and teachers come to school dressed in traditional attire. The event aimed to promote cultural diversity, tolerance, and harmony among students by encouraging them to learn and appreciate the customs and traditions of different castes, regions, and religions.

Embracing Cultural Identity

Neera Tharu, a ninth-grade student at the school, came dressed in a Tharu culture-inspired dress that included a lehenga choli, a yellow agran, a garland of silver coins around her neck, and silver bangles in her hands. Her outfit reflected the original intention of the program, which was to encourage students to enjoy and be proud of their cultural identity.

The program saw a diverse range of costumes, from the colorful and vibrant to the subtle and simple, with students and teachers alike showcasing their unique cultural heritage. Students from kindergarten to twelfth grade participated in the program, and the classrooms and school grounds were awash with a sea of colors and patterns.

Learning through Experience

The school's principal, Bamdev Dhakal, noted that the event aimed to reflect the social and cultural diversity within the school and provide students with an opportunity to learn about different castes and religions in their community. The program was a perfect example of learning by doing and learning by experiencing. Students not only had fun but also acquired knowledge and learned about the customs and traditions of their peers.

Jivaraj Pandey, the assistant principal of the school, said that the program promoted cultural harmony and tolerance among students. Through clothing, minority castes and communities had an opportunity to establish their hidden identity, and students were exposed to different cultural practices and customs.

Feeling Proud and Fresh

The event left a lasting impression on the students, who reported feeling a new sense of freshness, curiosity, and pride. Muslim student Yaman Banu, studying in the eleventh grade, expressed her happiness and pride in coming to school dressed in her cultural dress. She said that her friends thought she was a Brahmin, Chhetri, or a follower of Hinduism, but she felt proud to show her identity as a Muslim woman.

The program was highly appreciated by parents, such as Chakra Bahadur Shahi, who praised the school for its role in promoting cultural awareness and transfer. Overall, the event was a resounding success and a testament to the power of culture in promoting diversity, tolerance, and harmony.
