TU Central Campus Hostel Inspected by Parliamentary Committee

On Thursday, 19th Jestha 2082, the Industry, Commerce, Labour, and Consumer Welfare Committee of the House of Representatives conducted an inspection of Tribhuvan University’s Central Campus located in Kirtipur.

During the inspection of the TU Central Campus hostel, Members of Parliament observed poor sanitation and mismanagement in basic facilities. This prompted the committee to direct the concerned university authorities to take immediate corrective actions.

The parliamentary team visited Block ‘Nga’ of the Ishwari Kanya Girls' Hostel on Thursday afternoon to inspect the kitchen, water facilities, and overall condition. Following the visit, the team instructed the campus chief and other officials to improve the hostel's management.

Delegation Members Present During the Visit

The inspection team included:

  • Committee Chairperson Abdul Khan

  • MPs: Kantika Sejuwal, Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, Rekha Yadav, Suryaman Dong, Ranendra Baraili, Rukmini Rana Baraili, Sita Mijar, Sapana Rajbhandari, and Mangal Prasad Gupta

  • Dr. Ishwar Subedi from the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control

Students Raise Serious Concerns about Kitchen and Water Conditions

As the delegation arrived, students presented the poor condition of the hostel kitchen. They showed:

  • Extremely dirty kitchen utensils

  • Poor hygiene in food preparation areas

  • Dirty tables, chairs, and other essential items

Despite repeated complaints, students reported that the principal's office, student union leaders, and other responsible parties ignored their concerns. In some cases, hostel wardens reportedly responded with harsh and dismissive behavior.

Students Share Distressing Experiences

One student shared, “Even washing our faces becomes stressful due to a lack of clean water. When we complained about kitchen issues, the warden harshly replied, ‘This is a government hostel. You must manage with whatever is available.’”

Students further revealed that:

  • The water supply was minimal

  • The water provided was too muddy to use

  • During menstruation, they struggled to maintain hygiene with just one jar of water

Committee Questions TU Officials over Poor Standards

After observing the hostel conditions and listening to students, the parliamentary team questioned Principal Akaldev Mishra and Proctor Rajendra Kuwar. They reported that even the minimum standards for cleanliness and health were not being maintained.

Committee Chairperson Khan remarked, “It is unfortunate to see such a deteriorated condition in a prestigious institution like Tribhuvan University’s Central Campus. Denying students clean water and basic sanitation is a violation of human rights.”

TU Student Union Criticizes Administrative Negligence

President of the Free Student Union, Deepak Raj Joshi, stated that TU officials tend to ignore students' issues when raised politely. He noted, “When we demanded toilet maintenance, they remained silent. Only after we pressured them did the principal’s office respond—by closing the office restroom. That’s when our demand was finally met.”
