Appointment of Vice-Chancellor and Registrar at the University of Nepal

The Board of Trustees of the University of Nepal has officially appointed a Vice-Chancellor and a Registrar. These appointments have been made based on the recommendation of the committee formed under the University of Nepal Act, 2081.

Dr. Arjun Karki, a senior physician and former Vice-Chancellor of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences, has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Suryaraj Acharya, an expert in public policy and infrastructure development, has been appointed as the Registrar. This information was shared by the Chairperson of the Board, Engineer Lal Krishna KC.

Selection Process of University Officials

As per the University of Nepal Act, 2081, the Board of Trustees appointed the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar based on the recommendation of the selection committee.

The committee had shortlisted eligible candidates from the applications received through public notice. These candidates were required to submit a work plan and attend an interview. The final recommendations were made after evaluating all submissions and performances.

The appointments were executed in accordance with the Act’s provisions, following formal recommendations by the selection committee and final approval by the Board and the Chancellor.

Establishment and Governance Structure

The University of Nepal Act, passed by the Federal Parliament and certified by the President in Kartik 2081, defines the governance structure of the university. The highest governing body is the Board of Trustees.

According to the Act, the Chancellor is selected from among the members of the Board. Previously, Dr. Bindunath Lohani, former Vice-President of the Asian Development Bank, was appointed as the first Chancellor.

Vision and Mission of the University

The University of Nepal is a public, non-profit institution guided by an interdisciplinary approach to higher education. Its mission is to produce capable, responsible, creative, entrepreneurial, and competitive human resources by offering high-quality, research-based, and practical education.

Foundation and Operational Strategy

The university was established through the continued efforts of national and international scholars, intellectuals, experts, civil society leaders, political leaders, and the support of the Government of Nepal.

The University of Nepal has adopted a policy of operating academic programs only through its constituent campuses and does not grant affiliation to external institutions.

The government will support initial infrastructure development and partial operational costs. Long-term development and operational expenses will be managed through bilateral and multilateral donor agencies, private sector support, individual donations, student fees, and other university income sources.

Academic Programs from 2026

The University plans to launch undergraduate-level academic programs starting from the Fall Semester of 2026 (2083 B.S.). These will include disciplines such as science, humanities, and information technology, all aligned with the interdisciplinary educational model.
