The University of Nepal (UNepal), through its CeTLER, organized an interactive program titled "The Future of Higher Education" in collaboration with SAST and SPP.

Professor Lynn Pasquerella, President of the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), delivered the keynote address at the event.

The discussion focused on how higher education should prepare students in an era characterized by artificial intelligence (AI), complexity, and rapid change.

Student Participation in Curriculum Development

During the program, Professor Pasquerella emphasized the need to move beyond the traditional practice of designing curricula solely for students and instead adopt an approach in which curricula are co-created with students.

She highlighted the importance of involving learners in discussions about knowledge, skills, experiences, and perspectives.

The discussion emphasized that involving students in curriculum development could help universities foster a sense of ownership, greater engagement, and meaningful learning experiences.

Higher Education Beyond Employment

The program highlighted that the purpose of higher education should not be limited to securing employment.

Participants discussed the need for universities to promote interdisciplinary learning that develops students' critical thinking, ethical reasoning, civic responsibility, creativity, and ability to address complex global challenges.

The discussion emphasized that universities should prepare students not only for professional careers but also for broader responsibilities in society.

Artificial Intelligence and Human Qualities

During the question-and-answer session, students expressed interest in the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning.

The discussion reaffirmed the continued importance of the humanities and the need to preserve distinctly human qualities, including empathy, imagination, ethical judgment, and meaningful relationships.

These discussions highlighted the importance of human capabilities alongside technological developments in higher education.

In the context of reforming undergraduate education, the program concluded that the central objective of higher education should extend beyond preparing students for employment.

Instead, universities should help students develop as individuals, responsible citizens, and contributors to society.

University faculty members and students participated in the program.
