Vyas Municipality Urges Schools to Operate on Sundays, Citing Impact on Students’ Studies
Although the federal government has decided to provide public holidays two days a week, Vyas Municipality in Tanahun has urged schools within its area to operate on Sundays as well. The municipality has requested regular classes six days a week, saying students’ future and instructional time would be affected.
Mayor Baikuntha Neupane issued a press statement on Saturday, appealing to schools not to close in order to make students’ learning effective. He said the request was made considering that when schools run six days a week, there are 33 hours of teaching, but if classes are held only five days a week, teaching time drops to just 27 hours. The statement mentions that teaching in schools would be seriously affected if the 50-day winter and monsoon vacations, Sunday holidays, and other public holidays remain in place.
Earlier, a meeting of the municipality’s education committee and executive committee had unanimously decided to conduct regular classes in schools from Baisakh 7. In relation to teaching and learning, a broad discussion was also held at Vyas Municipality on Baisakh 16 among representatives of the education committee, head teachers, the Teachers’ Federation, PABSON, and N-PABSON.
The federal government has instructed that the enrollment campaign be conducted from Baisakh 15 and that classes begin only from Baisakh 21. However, the Municipal Association of Nepal and the National Association of Rural Municipalities in Nepal have already submitted a memorandum to the Education Minister, requesting reconsideration of that decision.
Mayor Neupane has appealed for classes to be conducted six days a week until the federal government makes a further new decision regarding winter and monsoon vacations. It has been stated that an additional official decision on this matter will be made by the municipality’s executive meeting to be held on Baisakh 22.
