Armed Police Force Exam Process and Syllabus

Armed Police Force’s written examination is among Nepal’s most “impartial and dignified” exams. Since it is conducted by the constitutional body, the Public Service Commission, success depends on “merit and competency” (Merit and Competency).

Only candidates who pass the physical and medical tests can appear in the written examination.

The details below on the written examination process (Examination Process) and syllabus (Syllabus) for the Armed Police Force, Nepal (APF Nepal) are based on the Public Service Commission’s guidelines and the prevailing standards of the Armed Police Service Commission.

Exam format and syllabus by post

(a) APF Inspector (Officer level)

The APF Inspector is the backbone of the organization. The exam tests intellectual ability, language proficiency, legal knowledge, and professional interest. It is generally divided into three papers.

Paper I: General Ability Test

Full marks: 100

Content:

• General Knowledge (GK): Nepal’s geography, history, culture, economic condition, constitution, and current national/international developments

• Intellectual Test (IQ/Aptitude): Logical ability, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, and numerical reasoning

Format: Objective multiple-choice questions (MCQs)

Paper II: Language and Communication

Full marks: 100

Content:

• Nepali language: Grammar, essay writing, report writing, and note/comment writing

• English language: Grammar, essay/report writing, translation (Nepali to English and vice versa), comprehension

Importance: This paper is included because communication skill (Communication Skill) is essential for a commander.

Paper III: Professional Orientation and Law

Full marks: 100

Content:

• Professional knowledge: Armed Police Act/regulations, security management, disaster management, border security, and force operation methods

• Law and constitution: Constitution of Nepal, Muluki Criminal Code, Evidence Act, and legal provisions related to human rights

Objective: To measure the depth of legal and organizational knowledge in a prospective officer.

(b) APF Assistant Sub-Inspector (Junior officer)

Since this post serves as a field commander (Field Commander), the syllabus focuses on practical knowledge.

First paper: General Ability

• Subjects: General knowledge (GK) and IQ

• Format: Objective (MCQs)

• It includes questions on matters of national importance and general reasoning.

Second paper: Language and service-related

• Nepali and English: Basic grammar, letter writing, and paragraph writing

• Service-related: Questions related to the Armed Police Act, regulations, and post-specific duties (Job Description)

Third paper: Professional practical knowledge

• Topics related to the constitution and field-level problem solving (Problem Solving)

(c) APF Jawan (Basic level)

For the Jawan post, the Grade 8 curriculum is the base. The exam is comparatively simple, but competition is high.

Full marks: 100

Syllabus breakdown:

• Nepali: Basic grammar, composition, and letter writing

• English: Basic vocabulary (Vocabulary) and sentence formation

• Mathematics: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, and profit and loss (Grade 8 level)

• Service-related (Sewa): Posts, ranks, and general information about the Armed Police Force

(d) Evaluation methodology

The Public Service Commission applies the following evaluation method:

• Negative marking (Negative Marking): In objective questions, 20% marks are deducted for each incorrect answer. This discourages guess-based answering.

• Pass marks: To pass the written exam, candidates generally need 40%, but higher scores are required to remain competitive for final selection.

(e) Tips for aspirants

Memorization alone is not enough to pass the written examination:

1. Consistency (Consistency): Study daily with the syllabus (Syllabus) as your guide.

2. Writing skill (Writing Skill): For the officer level, practice writing clearly within the given time.

3. IQ practice: Practice regularly to strengthen quick decision-making.

4. Current affairs: Stay updated through newspapers and news, as this helps in GK and essay writing.
