It works in entrepreneurship development, managerial skill development, technical assistance, research, consultancy, and support for micro, cottage, small, and medium enterprises.

IEDI began in 1982 as the Small Entrepreneurs Development Project. In 1996, it received legal identity as an autonomous institution through the Industrial Enterprise Development Institute Act, 2053. Its work focuses on entrepreneurship training, industrial productivity, business support, and advisory services related to small and medium enterprise development in Nepal.

IEDI operates under the Industrial Enterprise Development Institute Act, 2053, also referred to as the Industrial Enterprises Development Institute Act, 1996. The Act establishes the institute as a self-governing, organized body with perpetual succession. It can own movable and immovable property in its own name and can sue or be sued.

The institute’s core mandate includes:

• Providing training for entrepreneurship development

• Providing technical and managerial consultancy to increase industrial productivity

• Advising the government on creating a favorable environment for small and medium enterprise development

IEDI is also accountable through formal reporting and audit systems. It submits its annual report to the Government of Nepal through the Governing Board, and its audit is carried out by the Office of the Auditor General.

Governance and Organizational Structure

IEDI is governed by a Governing Board that makes policy decisions. The chairperson is generally the Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies or a distinguished person appointed by the government.

The board includes representation from stakeholders such as the Department of Industry, Cottage and Small Industry Office, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Federation of Nepal Cottage and Small Industries.

Daily operations are led by an Executive Director, who also serves as the Member Secretary of the board.

Services and Target Groups

Prospective entrepreneurs receive support in understanding business selection, market survey, costing, and business plan preparation. Existing entrepreneurs can access training and consultancy related to expansion, management, production, and quality improvement.

IEDI also works with trainers through Training of Trainers programs and supports institutions involved in entrepreneurship promotion.

Training and Learning Model

IEDI conducts entrepreneurship and management-related training programs. Its Entrepreneurship Development Programme focuses on practical learning, including market exposure, customer interaction, and business feasibility assessment.

The institute also conducts Training of Trainers programs for individuals and institutions working in entrepreneurship education. Business counseling is available for entrepreneurs who need individual guidance after training.

IEDI publishes training notices from time to time in national daily newspapers and on its website. Interested individuals are required to fill out the prescribed form and explain their business idea. The selection process may include an interview.

IEDI supports business incubation and startup-related services. Its incubation role includes support for early-stage entrepreneurs through workspace, internet, mentorship, and networking facilities.

For startup loans or concessional loans announced by the Government of Nepal, IEDI plays a technical role in helping prepare required business plans and providing recommendations.

Its location in central Kathmandu makes it accessible by public transportation. It is also reachable on foot from Sundhara or Kalimati.
