Gen Z Movement Brought Major Changes to Nepali Society and Politics: Prof. Dr. Luintel

Prof. Dr. Youba Raj Luintel of the Central Department of Sociology at Tribhuvan University (TU) has said that Nepali society and politics underwent major changes following the Gen Z movement.

He made the remarks while speaking at a discussion seminar titled "Social Structural Dynamics Underlying Nepal's Gen Z Uprising," organized by the Nepal Sociological Association at Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur.

Describing the Gen Z uprising as a turning point, Prof. Dr. Luintel said that class politics in Nepal had begun to shift following the movement.

He said that a new chapter had begun in Nepali politics following the dissolution of employee organizations and student organizations that had previously existed.

"The development of the Gen Z movement is a genuine rebellion of young people. It began as a protest, but considering the overall form it eventually took, it is appropriate to call it an 'uprising'," he said.

Prof. Dr. Luintel also noted that it is difficult to find a universally accepted definition of Gen Z. Referring to research published by the US-based Pew Research Center in 2023, he said Gen Z had been defined as the age group born between 1997 and 2012.

The seminar included academic discussions on contemporary social change, awareness among the younger generation, and new dimensions emerging in Nepal's socio-political situation.

Nepal Sociological Journal Released

The Nepal Sociological Association also released the "Nepal Sociological Journal" on the occasion.

Association President Ganesh Man Gurung expressed confidence that the journal, which includes research articles by sociology researchers, would help shed light on the deeper social and structural factors behind changes in Nepal and youth movements.

Professors, researchers, sociologists, and students attended the program.

The event was conducted by Nepal Sociological Association General Secretary Prof. Dr. Pasang Sherpa.
