Girls’ School in Janaki RM Attracts Madheshi and Muslim Students
Nepalgunj, Magh 14 - After the establishment of a girls’ school in Janaki Rural Municipality of Banke, girls from Madheshi and Muslim communities have been increasingly drawn to school.
The rural municipality stated that the number of girls studying has continued to rise due to the girls’ school it launched with the aim of keeping girls from both communities in school.
Rural municipality chairperson Chhabban Khan said the girls’ school was started for daughters who had been away from school due to social traditions, security concerns, and lack of access, and that the number of students at the school has been increasing.
According to him, from the academic session 2080, Janaki Rural Municipality established Shree Nepal National Girls’ Basic School in Manpur, Janaki Rural Municipality–3, and started teaching up to Grade 8 exclusively for girls.
According to Chief Administrative Officer Parasuram Upadhyay, the school began with 75 girls and currently has 420 girl students enrolled. He also said there is a long-term plan to expand the school up to Grade 12.
Upadhyay said the rural municipality operated the girls’ school at a cost of NPR 9 million. Of this, NPR 5 million received as a special grant from the federal government was used to build the school wall and toilets, while the rural municipality allocated an additional NPR 4 million to prepare the required infrastructure.
The rural municipality stated that Janaki Rural Municipality is recognized as the second local level in the district, after Nepalgunj, to operate a girls’ school. The school provides free education along with academic materials, uniforms, transportation, safe drinking water, and toilet facilities. Transportation has been arranged to include girls from all six wards, and it has been stated that vehicles will be added as needed.
The rural municipality said only female teachers and staff have been appointed at the school, considering concerns about the safety of the students. According to rural municipality spokesperson Tikanath Yadav, a separate girls’ school was operated because parents in Madheshi and Muslim communities may hesitate to send daughters outside the home.
He said that once safe transportation was arranged from home to school and from school to home, parents began sending their girls to school with confidence.
There are currently 45 schools operating in Janaki Rural Municipality. Social Development Committee Coordinator Ram Achal Dhobi said the municipality will now focus on upgrading schools and improving the quality of education.
Information Technology Officer Bikash GC said that along with the girls’ school, priority has also been given to digital education. According to him, the school has a computer lab, basic information technology education, and the use of digital learning materials. In the coming days, online classes and e-learning materials will be expanded.
