New Vice-Chancellors Appointed at Seven Universities, Oath Administered by Education Minister
Kathmandu, 4th July 2026 - Prime Minister and Chancellor of the universities Balen Shah has appointed new vice-chancellors at seven universities, including Tribhuvan University. Prime Minister Shah made these appointments on Friday from among the candidates recommended by the recommendation committee.
The details of the newly appointed vice-chancellors are as follows:
Tribhuvan University: Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa
Far Western University: Kisandatta Bhatta
Mid-West University: Rajan Subbalal
Agriculture and Forestry University: Rishiram Kattel
Rajarshi Janak University: Shyamnarayan Labh
Pokhara University: Devendra Adhikari
Purbanchal University: Sujanbabu Marhatta
Oath Taking and Assumption of Office
The newly appointed vice-chancellors were administered the oath of office and secrecy at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on Friday by Minister for Education, Science and Technology and Pro-Chancellor of the universities, Sumina Pokharel. Minister Pokharel also handed over appointment letters to the newly appointed vice-chancellors on Friday evening.
Selection Process
The government had called for applications for the vacant posts of vice-chancellor on Baisakh 24. The recommendation committee formed under the chairpersonship of the Education Minister selected names through open competition and recommended them to the Prime Minister. The posts had remained vacant after the government relieved office-bearers of various universities of their positions earlier in Shrawan.
Minister’s Directives and Commitment
Speaking at the oath-taking program, Pro-Chancellor and Education Minister Pokharel directed the newly appointed vice-chancellors to make university operations transparent, impartial, and professional. She urged them to carry out their responsibilities without coming under anyone’s pressure and assured them of full support from the ministry.
Minister Pokharel directed that the following reform measures be taken forward immediately on campuses:
Provide 10 percent scholarships in constituent campuses mandatorily and transparently.
Remove banners of various unions and trade unions from university and campus premises.
Vice-Chancellors’ Commitment
On behalf of the newly appointed vice-chancellors, the Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University expressed commitment to work fearlessly and honestly while maintaining the reputation and dignity of the university. He said that the open competitive selection process adopted by the government had raised their morale.
