National School Curriculum for School Education Being Revised, Taskforce Formed
The Ministry of Education has accelerated preparations to revise the national curriculum for school education. Responding to questions raised during the discussion on the ministry’s Appropriation Bill in the House of Representatives on Thursday, Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel informed that a taskforce has been formed to revise the national curriculum framework for school education and that work has already moved forward. He said the government is confident that significant improvements will be made in school education in line with the changing context once the new framework is implemented.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister Pokharel said the government is also preparing to merge schools with very low student numbers or reduce their level on the basis of geographical distance and various other factors. He said necessary steps will be taken in the coming fiscal year on matters including proposed school mapping and restructuring. However, he clarified that while merging schools on the basis of low student numbers, the right of even a single student to receive education will not be curtailed.
The government plans to conduct a detailed survey of all aspects, including the physical infrastructure, of all community schools in the coming year and prepare a report. According to Minister Pokharel, budget management for the development of school physical infrastructure and other works will be carried out gradually on the basis of the same survey report. He also informed that scientific standards for the teacher-student ratio will be determined through the new act and regulations related to school education.
Minister Pokharel stated that the problem of sanctioned posts in the education sector has emerged now because, in the past, only temporary decisions were made to solve immediate problems without managing teacher and employee positions according to need.
