School Education Act Process Reaches Final Stage: Minister Sasmit Pokharel
Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has said that the process of formulating the School Education Act has reached its final stage.
During a discussion held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Education and Sports in Singha Durbar with the president and representatives of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, Minister Pokharel said that the process of preparing the Act was in its final stage.
According to the Ministry, the discussion focused on concluding the School Education Act at the earliest and resolving various issues that the Teachers’ Federation has been raising over the years through bilateral dialogue.
Minister Pokharel said the Act would be finalized by incorporating issues that had been left out during the drafting process as well as the opinions and suggestions received.
He said the new Education Act would emphasize ensuring quality education and creating an environment in which students can receive quality education within Nepal.
Stressing that all stakeholders must move forward responsibly to reform school and higher education, Minister Pokharel said an environment providing quality education and adequate opportunities within the country should be created to discourage students from going abroad.
The discussion also covered measures needed to ensure continuity of education for students affected by the recent flooding in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa.
Minister Pokharel said schools should conduct disaster management drills from time to time to ensure students’ safety during disasters.
Shailendra Jha, chief adviser to the Education Minister, said the School Education Act should be further strengthened as part of efforts to improve school education. He emphasized the need to further strengthen cooperation between the Ministry and the Teachers’ Federation to address problems in the education sector.
Joint Secretary Shiv Kumar Sapkota of the Ministry said the issues raised by the Teachers’ Federation should be taken forward procedurally through dialogue and consensus.
Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi said the issues they had been raising could be resolved through dialogue.
Stating that the Teachers’ Federation would be the happiest if the School Education Act were issued soon, he said problems in the education sector could be addressed through dialogue and cooperation with the Ministry.
Officials from various teachers’ organizations participating in the discussion also expressed the view that problems in the education sector should be resolved on the basis of dialogue and consensus with the Ministry.
The discussion was attended by Education Minister Pokharel, senior Ministry officials, Nepal Teachers’ Federation President Subedi, and representatives of various teachers’ organizations.
