TU Recovers Rs. 104.6 Million from Professors Who Did Not Return to Service after Study Leave

Tribhuvan University (TU) has recovered Rs. 104.6 million from professors who did not return to service after taking study leave. Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel provided information about the matter on Thursday.

With the initiative of the Ministry of Education and Sports and the active involvement of Tribhuvan University, more than Rs. 104.6 million has been recovered from the professors. According to Minister Pokharel, additional professors who did not return to service are also taking part in the process of returning the amount.

TU had formed an investigation committee to study the matter of professors who went on study leave but did not return to work. After the committee prepared a report stating that the leave had been misused, the university issued a public notice directing them to return the amount. Based on the same notice, the professors returned the amount.

This action has been interpreted as an important achievement of the government campaign to establish good governance, accountability, and institutional discipline in the higher education sector. Minister Pokharel said that study leave is a special opportunity provided with the objective of making skilled, research-oriented, and internationally competent academic human resources available to the university.

“The misuse of this facility, obtained through public resources and state investment, and the tendency not to return to service have caused not only financial loss to the university but also educational and moral damage,” he said.

After the Ministry took the matter seriously and encouraged the university to take necessary initiatives, the process of recovering the amount through investigation and legal procedures gained momentum. Minister Pokharel added, “This achievement is not merely a matter of recovering money; it is an important step toward ensuring public accountability, maintaining institutional discipline, and strengthening citizens’ trust in the higher education system.”
