BIT at Tribhuvan University is an undergraduate Information Technology program that combines core computing subjects with supporting courses in mathematics, statistics, management, economics, sociology, research methodology, and technical writing.

The technical side of the curriculum includes C Programming, Object-Oriented Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Management System, Operating System, Web Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Information Security, Database Administration, networking, and system administration. This makes TU BIT broader than a short technical certificate or training course. Students complete a university degree structure over eight semesters rather than studying only one programming language or a narrow IT skill.

If we talk about the BIT program at Tribhuvan University, Tribhuvan University introduced the course in 2076 BS. When it was introduced, the program started at five campuses. Within the Kathmandu Valley, it was launched at Patan Multiple Campus, while outside the Valley it began at four campuses.

One of the main reasons for introducing BIT can be understood by looking at the program that existed before it. Before BIT, there was BSc CSIT at Tribhuvan University, which was under the Institute of Science and Technology. However, only students from the science stream could enroll in BSc CSIT. In BIT, students from streams other than science can also apply for admission.

Main Objectives of the BIT Program

PCL or equivalent

Applicants who have completed the Proficiency Certificate Level or an equivalent qualification from any faculty must meet the subject condition stated by IoST for English and Mathematics or Computer. Grade 11–12 or equivalent

Applicants from any stream must meet the IoST subject requirement for English plus Mathematics or Computer. The portal states that applicants must obtain at least a C grade in the required English and Mathematics-or-Computer subjects, pass the other subjects, obtain at least GPA 1.6, and have a final CGPA of at least 1.8.

CTEVT three-year diploma

Students who have completed a three-year diploma from the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) have a separate eligibility route. The current portal states the applicable English and Mathematics-or-Computer subject condition and requires at least second division.

IoST specifically advises applicants to check eligibility before depositing the entrance application fee and states that a submitted application fee is not refundable.

TU BIT Admission Process and Entrance Exam

Yes. IoST maintains a dedicated BIT entrance route and provides the online BIT application through its entrance system.

These cycle-specific notices can change quickly. Applicants should therefore use the current IoST entrance for admission dates, forms, examination arrangements, priority procedures, quotas, fees, and other active-cycle instructions rather than relying on an older course profile.

The first requirement for admission is to meet the eligibility criteria.

After that, the Institute of Science and Technology or the Dean's Office announces the admission process for the new intake. Applicants then complete the application form.

The Dean's Office conducts a separate entrance examination. The examination consists of multiple-choice questions and carries a total of 100 marks.

The entrance examination includes:

First, Tribhuvan University is itself one of the reputed and largest universities, and it is recognized worldwide.

Looking at universities within Nepal, TU has large infrastructure, established human resources and faculty members, as well as international recognition. From that perspective, I consider TU's BIT program to be a good option.

When comparing it with BIT programs run through international universities, it is important to know the background of the particular university concerned. We need to understand which university it is and what kind of recognition that university has.

Simply seeing the name of an international university is not enough to determine whether studying BIT through that university is appropriate. Students should first inquire about the university and its recognition.

If it is a good university, then of course that is a different matter. However, Tribhuvan University itself has worldwide recognition, extensive infrastructure, and available human resources. For these reasons, I believe studying BIT through Tribhuvan University is a good option and that it provides quality education.

Is TU BIT the Right Course for You?

TU BIT may fit students who want a four-year Information Technology degree with programming, databases, networking, security, management-related subjects, research, project work, electives, and an internship.

Before deciding, students should assess five practical points: whether they meet the current IoST eligibility rules, whether the curriculum matches their academic interests, whether BIT is available at a suitable institution in the active admission cycle, whether the campus cost is manageable, and whether the degree fits their further-study or career plans.

A student from Management or Humanities, for example, should not decide eligibility from the stream name alone. The current IoST rules focus on the required subjects and qualification-specific grade conditions.

Similarly, a CTEVT diploma holder should compare the diploma and academic record directly with the CTEVT eligibility route published on the active IoST portal before submitting the application.

Advice for Students Considering BIT

Speaking personally, today's world is highly dependent on IT technology. Whether it is the government, an organization, or an individual, we all depend on IT technology, and much of our work is carried out using it.

Even when the government provides services to citizens, those services are increasingly delivered through IT technology.

For that reason, I believe students should consider studying IT, including BIT, at least at the bachelor's level. After completing a bachelor's degree, they can choose another field according to their interests if they wish.

In the present situation, whether we look at the country, individual organizations, or our own day-to-day work, there is a strong dependence on IT.
