The 168-credit structure includes 122 theory credits, 32 practical credits, 2 seminar credits, 6 project-work credits, and 6 professional-internship credits. Each semester normally includes at least 16 weeks of instruction.

What students study in B.Pharm

The first year establishes the chemistry, natural-product, analytical, physical-science, and biological foundations of pharmacy. First-semester subjects include Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry, Pharmacognosy-I, Physical Chemistry, Mathematics, Basic Computer Applications, and Communication Skill, with practical courses attached to several subjects.

The second semester introduces Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry-I, Pharmacognosy-II, Physical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Analysis-I, and Anatomy & Physiology-I, along with laboratory work.

During the second year, students progress through Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry-II, Pharmacognosy-III, Pharmaceutical Analysis-II, Pharmaceutical Engineering-I, Anatomy & Physiology-II, Biochemistry, Chemistry of Natural Products, Pharmaceutical Engineering-II, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, and Pharmacology-I. Practical courses run alongside the major science and pharmacy subjects.

Pharmaceutical technology, pharmacology, and applied study

The fifth semester includes Medicinal Chemistry-I, Pharmaceutical Technology-I, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Pharmacology-II, Public Health Pharmacy, Pathophysiology, and Seminar-I. Laboratory study is included in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, and pharmaceutical biotechnology.

Sixth-semester study covers Medicinal Chemistry-II, Pharmaceutical Technology-II, Pharmacology-III, Biopharmaceutics & Pharmacokinetics, Biostatistics, and Seminar-II. Practical work accompanies the major pharmaceutical science subjects.

By the seventh semester, the curriculum moves further into professional and practice-oriented areas through Dosage Form Design, Pharmaceutical Management, Pharmacotherapeutics, Research Methodology, Forensic Pharmacy, and Dispensing and Community Pharmacy. Research Methodology and Proposal Design, Dosage Form Design, and Dispensing and Community Pharmacy also include practical components.

Final semester, project work, and internship

The eighth semester includes Hospital Pharmacy, Drug Delivery System, Instrumental Analysis, and Clinical Pharmacy. Practical study accompanies Hospital Pharmacy, Drug Delivery System, and Instrumental Analysis.

The final semester also contains six credits of project work and six credits of professional internship. The semester carries 25 credits in total, making it the largest single-semester credit load in the program.

Project work involves literature review, research activity, preparation of a report, and presentation or defense under academic supervision. The curriculum also requires a compulsory professional internship lasting six weeks and two days in an industrial setting, QA/QC laboratory, hospital, or community pharmacy.

Practical learning and observation visits

Laboratory work is part of the course from the first semester onward. Students work with pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, analysis, pharmaceutical engineering, microbiology, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, biopharmaceutics, dosage-form design, hospital pharmacy, and instrumental analysis across different stages of the degree.

The curriculum also incorporates visits to hospitals, pharmaceutical industries, drug regulatory bodies, research laboratories, community pharmacies, and drug-distribution settings. Pharmacognosy-related field observation includes medicinal plants, while pharmaceutical-industry visits are linked with manufacturing systems, utilities, dosage-form production, and quality-control processes.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching combines lectures with laboratory work, demonstrations, problem-oriented learning, self-directed study, seminars, observation visits, project work, and internship.

A minimum of 80 percent attendance in both theory and practical classes is required. Students must obtain at least 50 percent in theory and 60 percent in practical subjects separately to pass the respective components.

Assessment includes internal evaluation and end-semester examination. Theory courses carry 20 marks of internal assessment and 80 marks in the final examination. Practical courses carry 30 internal marks and 20 final marks. Seminars, project work, and professional internship also have internal and final assessment components. End-semester examinations are conducted through Purbanchal University's Examination Management Office.

Eligibility for B.Pharm

The Purbanchal University curriculum identifies several academic entry backgrounds for the B.Pharm program. These include 10+2, I.Sc. or equivalent education with Physics and Chemistry together with Mathematics or Biology, as well as specified pharmacy and health-science diploma backgrounds subject to the required academic criteria and professional registration where applicable.

For admission at NCHST, the applicable intake is governed by the prevailing Medical Education Commission framework and MECEE-BL requirements.

Admission through MECEE-BL

Admission to B.Pharm is based on MECEE-BL and follows the prevailing rules, guidelines, code of conduct, scholarship provisions, seat-allocation system, fee structure, and admission procedures of the Medical Education Commission (MEC), Nepal.

Seats are determined by MEC for the relevant academic intake and may vary from one year to another. Fee provisions, scholarships, admission procedures, seat distribution, and examination-related guidelines are also subject to MEC decisions and the official admission calendar.

Academic and professional focus

The program develops study across pharmaceutical chemistry, drug analysis, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, manufacturing, hospital and clinical pharmacy, community pharmacy, medication distribution, pharmaceutical care, and drug information.

Its practice-oriented components also introduce students to pharmaceutical manufacturing units, hospital and community pharmacy settings, quality-control work, clinical pharmacy, research, and medication-related services. Professional opportunities after graduation depend on licensing, individual qualifications, experience, and the requirements attached to specific positions.

Nepal Pharmacy Council licensing

Graduation from B.Pharm is followed by the professional licensing requirements applicable to pharmacy practice. Graduates must pass the required licensing examination of the Nepal Pharmacy Council before entering professional practice.

Academic completion and professional licensing are therefore separate requirements. Students completing the degree need to meet the council provisions applicable at the time they seek professional registration.
