The Purbanchal University BSN curriculum was restructured in 2019. Across the four academic years, the program covers nursing care from individual and hospital settings to family and community health, maternal care, mental health, research, education, and health-service management.
What students study during the four years
First year: Nursing foundations and health sciences
The first year establishes the scientific and nursing base needed for later clinical work. Students study Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology/Parasitology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Foundation of Nursing, and Community Health Nursing-I.
Foundation of Nursing carries a substantial practical component, while Community Health Nursing-I introduces community-based nursing practice early in the course. Anatomy and Physiology, basic sciences, and Nutrition and Dietetics also include practical components within the curriculum.

Students study Research and Biostatistics in Nursing, Educational Science, Leadership and Management, and Medical-Surgical Nursing-III. The advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing component covers cardiopulmonary, oncology, nephrology, and neurology nursing.
Research and Biostatistics in Nursing includes a substantial practical component, while Educational Science and Leadership and Management connect nursing practice with teaching and administrative responsibilities. The fourth year contains 370 theory hours and 1,200 practical hours.
Clinical and practical learning
BSc Nursing is structured around both classroom learning and supervised practical work. The practical load increases as students progress through clinical, community, maternal, research, education, and management areas.

Practical evaluation is divided equally between internal and final assessment, with 50 percent allocated to each. Internal practical assessment may involve performance evaluation, case studies and presentations, client teaching, student teaching, nursing care plans, project work, procedure evaluation, documentation, logbooks, and other course-specific activities.
The final practical assessment incorporates practical or procedure-based evaluation along with OSPE/OSCE or simulation and viva components.
Admission and MECEE-BL
Admission to BSc Nursing is based on MECEE-BL and follows the prevailing rules of the Medical Education Commission (MEC), Nepal.
Applicants must meet the eligibility and admission requirements applicable to the relevant MEC admission cycle. The process follows MEC provisions covering the entrance examination, admission procedures, code of conduct, scholarship arrangements, seat allocation, fee structure, and official admission calendar.
Seat numbers are determined by MEC for each intake and may vary from one year to another. Fees, scholarship provisions, seat distribution, examination guidelines, and admission procedures may also be revised through MEC decisions. The applicable MEC rules for the particular admission year therefore govern the admission process.
The Purbanchal University curriculum also establishes a science and Biology background for entry into the program, while entrance examination requirements are governed by the applicable medical education admission system.
