Student Electrical Safety Awareness Campaign in Gulmi
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Gulmi Distribution Centre has launched a student awareness campaign to reduce electrical risks.
The distribution centre has stated that the campaign has been started with a focus on schools because people who do not know how to use electrical equipment safely may lose their lives, and school-age children are at higher risk.
Students are being made aware of the points to be considered while using electrical materials, the types of materials, the risks involved and preventive measures.
Information officer of NEA Gulmi Distribution Centre, Bharat Pokhrel, said that the campaign is aimed at making students aware of these issues.
Pokhrel stated that, as feedback has shown that it is very easy and effective to spread awareness from the school level to communities and individual households, the campaign will be conducted throughout the district.
According to Pokhrel, students of Devisthan Secondary School in Malik Rural Municipality-7, Ghamir, Bagla Secondary School in Dhurkot Rural Municipality-7, and Jansahayog Secondary School in Resunga Municipality-5 have so far been provided with awareness on electrical safety.
Students have reported feeling more aware and happy after receiving information on electrical safety directly at the school level.
Schools have also stated that life cannot be easy and simple in the coming era without new technology and technical knowledge, and therefore NEA’s campaign has been very result-oriented.
Instruction for Electrical Safety
-
Do not touch electrical switches, plugs, wires or appliances with wet hands or bare feet. Always dry your hands first.
-
Do not overload a single socket with many plugs, multi-plugs or high-power appliances at the same time. This can cause overheating and fire.
-
Never touch loose, naked or damaged wires. If you see any exposed or broken wire, stay away and immediately inform an adult or contact the electricity office.
-
Keep a safe distance from electric poles, transformers and overhead lines. Do not play, climb trees or fly kites near electricity lines.
-
Switch off and unplug electrical appliances (iron, heater, rice cooker, kettle, TV, phone charger) after use, especially before going to bed or leaving the house.
-
Do not try to repair electrical problems by yourself. In case of sparks, burning smell, shock or any fault, immediately switch off the main switch (if safe to do so) and call a trained electrician or NEA office.
-
If someone gets an electric shock, do not touch the person directly. First, switch off the main power or use a dry wooden stick or other non-metal object to separate the person from the source, and then seek medical help at once.
