Education Minister Rai Prioritizes Khwopa University Bill

Education Science and Technology Minister Announces Upcoming Submission to Parliament

In a recent meeting with Bhaktapur Municipality officials, Education Science and Technology Minister Ashok Kumar Rai conveyed the government's commitment to advancing higher education by bringing the long-pending Khwopa University Bill to Parliament. This initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing educational infrastructure under the local patronage of Bhaktapur Municipality.

Advocacy for Public University Status

Sunil Prajapati, head of Bhaktapur Municipality, presented a formal request to Minister Rai on January 4, 2024, advocating for the official passage of the 'Khwopa University Bill, 2080.' Prajapati's proposal underscores the community's aspiration to elevate the existing educational institutions in Bhaktapur to a full-fledged public university.

Khwopa's Educational Milestones Highlighted

The meeting highlighted the evolution of Khwopa's educational ecosystem, which began with the establishment of Khwopa Secondary School in 2056 BS and expanded to include Khwopa Engineering College and Khwopa College in 2058 BS, followed by Khwopa Polytechnic Institute in 2060 BS, Khwopa College of Engineering in 2065 BS, and most recently Khwopa College of Law in 2079 BS. These institutions collectively accommodate over seven thousand students from across Nepal, demonstrating the potential impact of the proposed university on the nation's academic landscape.

Anticipated Benefits of the Bill

The approval of the Khwopa University Bill is expected to offer significant advantages to the local and national student body. By transitioning into a public university, Khwopa is poised to become a more accessible hub for quality higher education, contributing to the intellectual and professional growth of students from diverse backgrounds.

Call for Expedited Legislative Action

Mayor Prajapati's engagement with the Ministry of Education has led to the formation of a dedicated committee for Khwopa University. The Mayor's interaction with Minister Rai stressed the need for prompt legislative action, encouraging the ministry to prioritize the bill in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

The proposed Khwopa University represents significant progress in Nepal's educational sector. With the government's prioritization of the bill, students and educators alike may soon witness the birth of a new era for the city of Bhaktapur and the nation's academic development. Minister Rai's assurance suggests that the journey of Khwopa from a cluster of educational institutes to a prestigious public university is on the horizon, fostering optimism for a future rich in learning opportunities.
