Over the past two years, Suryabinayak Municipality has taken important steps to strengthen public education. By appointing school management committee chairs from among local representatives and selecting school principals through open competition, the municipality has brought fresh energy into its community schools.
27 Schools Show Notable Improvement
A two-day review session was held with the chairs and principals of all 27 community schools in the municipality. During the event, schools shared their progress, and the conclusion was clear: student enrollment has gone up, and learning conditions have improved.
Positive Outcomes from Leadership Restructuring
School principals presented updates during the session, while education experts from the Ministry reviewed their performance. The findings showed that appointing chairs from the local community and hiring principals through a fair process helped make real improvements in both management and teaching.
Mayor Highlights the Role of Accountability
Mayor Basudev Thapa reflected on the decision to appoint chairs and principals more thoughtfully. Within just two years, schools have seen noticeable gains. He encouraged schools to continue building on this momentum:
“Our goal is to make community schools a place where every child wants to study. If budget is what you need to make that happen, let us know—we’ll support you. But the responsibility to improve learning is yours.”
Vice Mayor Emphasizes the Principal’s Role
Deputy Mayor Sarita Timilsina Bhattarai pointed out that the impact of reforms should be seen in student performance as well. She stressed that principals play a key role in making education work and should focus on delivering results that matter to families and the wider community.
Need to Keep Pushing Forward
Even though the last two years have shown encouraging signs, speakers and experts urged schools not to stop here. The municipality’s approach is working—but there’s still room to grow, especially with more focus on long-term educational outcomes.
Community Support and Rising Enrollments
Municipal spokesperson and Social Development Committee coordinator, Ravindra Sapkota, noted that the number of students in community schools has steadily increased. In several schools, seats are filling even before enrollment campaigns begin—a sign of growing trust from families.
Experts Share Recommendations for Future Steps
Education scholars Dr. Tulsi Prasad Thapaliya and Dr. Balram Timilsina reviewed all school presentations and offered practical suggestions. They advised focusing more on measurable outcomes and shared ideas to help schools become even more effective in the coming years.
